I started a couple threads about the box and accessories. Finally got around to putting them all together in one spot for some pictures. I inherited this 39-2 from my grandfathers large collection. He said this was his favorite pistol. He said it fed and shot every kind of 9mm ammo he put through it without a hitch. Only pistol he was able to say that about. Also said he wished he had two! I didn't know he had the box till I was going through some of his boxes of boxes. The corner brackets rusted so I put some cardboard to reinforce from the inside. They made the top a little too tight of a fit so I peeled a few layers off any now it is snug. Like him I don't store the pistol in the box so I will put it in my box of boxes. The box was empty when I got it. While researching the box I noticed the original accessories and what do you know, that little screw driver looks like the one from his cleaning kit! Separated a while ago I am sure, then that cleaning rod also might be a match? Maybe. I tossed in a new 9mm bronze brush just to round it out. Forever missing are the papers and S&W printed anti-corrosion paper. Cant have everything but pretty happy to have what I got.

Good for you! I'm sorry for your loss but I know your grandfather would be pleased that his favorite gun is being well cared for and appreciated. I would strongly suggest you write down all you know about the gun and it's relationship with your grandfather and put that info in the box. Then when it comes time to pass it on to your grandson, he can have a full appreciation of it as well.

In the Spring of 1979 I bought a used Model 39-2 for my dad. It came from a small town policeman and although there were no box or docs, it came with three mags and a two mag carrier. Since he was seriously left handed, I put an aftermarket ambi safety on it for him. I inherited it a couple of years ago and treasure it... I've only replaced the aftermarket ambi safety with an OEM and added the factory optional adjustable sight. Yes, it will be passed on with proper history for its descendant owner.

Mr. Gator, nice simple repair. I dont think those boxes were really designed to last 60 years. I have had a few that are pristine and must have resided in a drawer that was never opened. And a nice gun from gramps.
