Inherited a large amount of weapons. What do I do?

Armslist.com is a local internet site, you can check to see if they have a local branch. Gunbroker.com is the eBay of guns. for unusual guns it might be a better option as it is nationwide. This forum and the coltforum.com have for sale forums, but you need to have a minimum number of posts. Ebay would be a good place to list gun parts, dies, etc.

A spring gun show isn't a bad idea. If your guns are at all off beat, and it sounds like some are, selling online seems better to me. The trouble with Armslist.com is you may encounter someone who will try and rob you. This has been a problem some places with Craigslist. (Craigslist doesn't sell guns).

Do your research and find a good price range. Also, I would say good pictures are a must. I have a favorite pawn shop I sometimes sell guns to. IMO, at the prices he pays I lose about $100 on a $1000 gun or $50 on cheaper guns over top retail. I would be concerned about selling him 40 guns though.

If you sell on Gunbroker and don't have much feedback that is a big turn off to some folks. Also if you don't offer to take a credit card, folks get concerned that once they pay for the gun they may never hear from you. Also it is a hassle, but some folks offer a 3 day return privilege assuming the gun isn't fired. If you have good feedback on eBay, i have seen gunbroker sellers reference that. Having one or two (or three or four) guns as trading stock is kind of neat, having 40 to dispose of is a Pain.

If you know your local pawn dealer he would probably sale them for 20% and you wouldnt have to mess with them. I can see 1-2 hours each in each gun if you do it yourself. Good luck. Besides that up to one hour each cleaning them up if they have been sitting.

i would probably try the gun show thing ,might be ok being on the other side of the table for a change .chance to meet new people and talk about guns all day.
but with all the guns available and horse tradin going on you might just come home with 40 different guns

IMO, you need to record the serial numbers and take good pictures. If you take it to a pawn shop where you do not have a very good relationship he may make sweetheart deals with his regulars at your expense. Also, IMO 20% is too much on a $1000 gun if he doesn't have to lay out funds ahead of time.

On the plus side, all transactions will be handled by a licensed dealer.

BTW, Gun stores and pawn shops to me it makes no difference. I would take the pictures in and see what they say. Most of what these stores sell is black rifles and polymer frame pistols.

1. Stop calling them weapons.

2. Easiest way to liquidate firearms bequeathed to you by a relative who thought you might enjoy having them but you don't want them is to take them to a local gun shop and put them on consignment. The dealer can put a realistic price on them and do the actual work of selling for a 15 or 20 % fee (with so may gun ask for a 15% rate). You don't do anything except sit back and wait for the checks.

3. Open an account on Gunbroker and start each at $1. They will sell for around the going rate but then you have to package and ship them and for 15% I would rather take them to the local gun shop.

Anyone else who might have possibly been in-line for inheritance that might want them?

I wouldn't call the 45-70 a specialty caliber either. its just an old hunting and military caliber, like the 30-06, and the 444 is just a new version of the 45-70. I'd happily add either to my limited collection. I hope you keep at least 1 gun of that type.

I'd probably list 2 or 3 at a time and sell them myself over a couple of years.

Those all seem like common calibers to me. I would resist calling any of them otherwise when it come time to sell.

I have found a lot of condescending posts here. I appreciate the good feedback. I think I will forgo listing anything here and just stick to gunbroker. Thanks again to those who didn't feel the need to correct me based upon their opinions and just gave good advice. I really appreciate it.

As Jeff Cooper once said: The problem with the Internet is it is full of people who have nothing to say that say it anyway.

Thanks again to all who helped. I will return the Pms with requested info and photos.

take what you need and leave the rest. don't know what to think about you calling some replies condescending and your decision not to use the forum classifieds. seems a bit shortsighted to me.

I guess dealing with a death has made me a might bit testy and sensitive and not wanting to put up with all the people who would rather try to correct me according to their opinion than help.

Also, the TOS requires that I not post a laundry list but rather one thread per.... I have the list and photos. So thats where I am at. I am going to respond to the PMS I got then I am done.

Thanks

I decided to create a webpage for them rather than try to manage forum posts. I have some rare ones so far so I am happy. Thanks for all the advice
