Sorry, cannot go to school next week because Inservice Orientation killed me. Kids are going to have to deal with Corpse Teacher.

Also, tasers have the electrodes and firearms are expressly forbidden...so what do you self defense gurus recommend to have on campus? I'm tired of being unprotected where sometimes I feel most vulnerable.

You're a teacher? I thought Captain Torque Wrench meant you were a mechanic of some sort...or that maybe you just like busting nuts. :D

yes, I am a music teacher. In Texas, it's an EC-12 music certification whch means you can teach anything music related at any grade level. I prefer junior high and high school band but I also work with adult choirs.

captain torque wrench is an old nickname. In one week, i stripped out the shower faucet, the kitchen faucet, and both oil plugs on my mustang. It's hard to open a jar after I close it...so, my hubby's friend stared calling me Captain Torque Wrench and it stuck.

Hahaha, mechanic. I CAN do what I need, and have fun in the garage (or used to) but don't do much turning of the wrenches lately.

As far as busting...only when necessary.

back to what I can carry...there are stun type guns, no electrode wires, yes? Something that is legal to have on campus. I really need to know. Not for myself but also for the high school daughters who will be getting to school by themselves more often and will be doing to and from home after the band bus or ROTC bus gets them back to school after games and other events at night.

recommendations?

You sound like a very self-confidant Woman. I don't think you have anything to worry about. A fierce stare that says "You really don't wanna mess with me, buddy" will do wonders.

That and a t-shirt that says "PMS Patrol". THAT will scare ANY guy!!!

how about an expanding baton or one of those tactical pens. Can always keep a squirt bottle of ammonia for cleaning windows, desks and instruments.

hmmm i don't know about ammonia. certain chemicals are verboten...BUT that suggestion does make me think of the things I already have to use that may be effective for self defense. Like mouthpiece sanitizer. That stuff is rank. Some kind of mentholated alcohol.

what's stupid is we can have nail polish remover in the rooms, but not acetone. Just depends on the container! I can use pro strength nail polish remover to clean transparencies etc but cannot go get acetone from the auto parts store. There is no difference except package and price, and one is allowed and one is not without a serious stack of paperwork.

Oh...and PMS patrol? HAHAHAHA! I still would feel better about knowing what's best to give my teen daughters.

wrench,

Yes, there are stun guns which don't fire electrode wires, but that means that one has to make contact with the attacker -not real desireable. He could knock it out of your hand, or grab your wrist and keep the stun gun away from him -you get the idea.

I'm not a 'guru', but I know of only one self-defense product other than a firearm with which you can defend yourself remotely -pepper spray(or "OC", as it's called). Will the school permit you to carry that?

Andy

P.S. I, too, am a recovering(or perhaps incurable?) overtorquer. I own four different torque wrenches and must use them faithfully when I do my automotive work lest I damage every fastener I touch. As the saying goes, "Been there, done that."

P.P.S. I see I'm behind the game again with this post. Check out the link posted above for OC products.

There is a type of stun gun that doesn't require contact with the attacker. it's called an "air taser" does anyone know about these? I'd like to know about what you guys recommend instead of what the guys trying to sell me one at a gun show say about them.

And yes, pepper sprays are permissable to carry. There is one that the Mr saw that has a really really long range, and he can't remember what it was.

I don't know if it would be allowed, and I don't have personal experience, but I have read that a faceful of wasp and hornet killer sprays are quite effective at discouraging people and I believe that they also have some range!

Nasty stuff for sure.I keep some in the work truck at all times. It'll shoot 15 feet or better and is accurate.I'll bet its on the No No list.

Pepper spray with a fluorescent yellow (or other bright color) dye.
Shoes for running away in after the pepper spray. High heels might look cool but aren't the best for getting out of a dangerous situation.

Self defense course(s).
A thumb or finger stuck as far as it will go into someone's eye WILL give one a bit of time to get away. Or is that not PC?

No matter the weapon - Training and KNOWING how to use it effectively is absolutely necessary. Otherwise you may be providing the BadGuy with another tool to use against you.

There's an NRA course --- "Refuse To Be A Victim" --- which is likely worthwhile for you and your daughters. Any of the "pepper spray" devices are way better than nothing. I'm dubious about the "tactical" pens --- I own and carry one, but it isn't the first tool/weapon of choice, and it's probably of minimal efficacy in unskilled hands. I think that a keen sense of "situational awareness" and a "Condition Yellow" mindset are probably as important as marginally effective substitutes for lethal or incapacitating weapons. Your situation is a real conundrum, but at the least, you're thinking about it.
