Instant Attraction to a gun

Each of us have things we look for in guns. There is always that instant attraction that causes us to dig deep in our pockets to pay for the gun we could not pass up.

What do you look for in a gun that screams, "Buy Me" once you first lay eyes on it?

For me it is several things:

Stainless: I do not like black or two tone guns.

Full size: No compacts for me. I want all the advantages of a gun with bulk. I own some compacts but never shoot them.

Caliber: Let's go .40, .357 or larger. No mosqito guns like 9mm, .380 or such. It needs to be able to get the job done in short order. I figure if the guns is not suitable to LEA, it is not suitable for me. I own some small caliber guns but seldom shoot them.

Grips: Give me the wood grips with a nice finish. They look more appealing.

Brand: OK, this will hit a nerve with some. I want S&W, Colt, Dan Wesson or a custom gun. While I own some other makes, I do not shoot them either. Never had a Springfield I liked but never sell a gun once bought either.

So there is my counter appeal. I can walk past the gun counter and never pay attention to ther guns unless they have the above. While I will buy guns that do not meet my criteria from individuals, I buy them based on price just to add to the collection.

So speak out. What is your instant attraction?

Wood and blue big bore revolvers. I have many other types, but I seem to have come full circle back to the old timers.

Blued P&R S&W N frames and especially short barreled ones are my weakness. Other frame sizes will get my attention too as well as older Ruger SAs.

Fortunately for my pocketbook I have a pretty good collection already and something new doesn't come up often but when it does I don't seem to have much problem coming up with the money for what I want.

Colt Detective Specials, Cobras, early Agents. Blue or nickel. Finding grips for them is a hobby in itself. SS steel later production DS II and SF models all have FP in frame so they're out.

Unfortunately it seems to be anything with a trigger, especially if it says Smith & Wesson on the side!

I am an avid accumulator of 1917's and other models which fire .45acp. My second weakness is for the Model of 1905. I prefer wood or elk (stag is almost as expensive as ivory) and leather holsters over anything plastic. My guns all go into EPS leather.

Pretty wood will get my attention every time. I can't walk by a table at a gun show that has something with pretty wood. Even if I'm really not interested in the gun I will stop and admire the wood. Case color hardening is another big attraction. I also have a huge weakness for .22lr rifles and well done K98 action sporting rifles.

As for S&W revolvers, there are more deal killers that attractions. I'm attracted to older P&R blued K frames, but also like stainless guns and other frame sizes. For me deal killers are the really new stuff like the 7,8, and 10 shot wheelguns, the dog leg cylinder stop, the infernal lock...... well you get the idea.

Seeing a Winchester Model 94 lever action where the front sight is behind the front barrel band, meaning its an oldie. Also when I see a big bore N frame Smith with a 4-inch barrel. Seeing a nice Model 10 or pre-Model 10 with a 6-inch barrel. Love em.

USGI M1 carbines do it for me. Can't hardly walk by one without making an offer on it. I just like the feel of the gun and the history behind them . . . don't really have a viable use for them, though. I must have said, "this is the last one" over two dozen times.

My first real 'love at first sight' gun was the Colt 1911, still have a weakness for them.

Blue and steel revolvers, S&W and Colt are great, and I never ignore a nice nickel one, as well... I really like the looks of medium frame revolvers the best, K frames and Pythons just look 'right' to me. Prefer the snubby, and 4" tubes, but a 6" Model 19 looks/shoots great, too... Large frame, medium frame, and small frame, I like them all. Favorite N Frames are the Model 27, and Model 25. For the little ones, give me a Detective Special, those are some good shooting little guns...

For caliber, I like .45 ACP the best. For revolver shooting, I go mainly with .38/.357. And I always bring, at least, one .22 on any trip to the range.

Overall, if it's a S&W, Colt, Winchester, or Marlin, I'll give it a good look.
