My daughter is a serious 'hobbiest' photographer. Much like I carry separate insurance for my guns I recently asked her if she has her camera gear insured. As is customary it would require a rider on her homeowners for adequate coverage but her insurer has an exclusion if you "use your equipment to make money". She does occasionally show her photos and literally makes pennies. Are there insurers that work in this field similar to those that specialize in gun insurance?

Travelers writes my insurance with all of my riders (photog equip included). If you have thousands of dollars invested your photography equipment and only generate hundreds in revenue then you aren't making money. I would ask your agent but I am led to believe that you need to overcome your costs before you generate a profit,
Hope that helps bull!

Hi Bullmack :)

I found this thread while searching for something else ...

I am late to the party on this thread, but the two posters above me are very correct from their own personal experience.

If this is something you haven't been able to look into yet, for the amateur photographer, it is very inexpensive to insure what can get to be some very expensive equipment and it gives you a lot of peace of mind. Several companies that offer these riders insure against theft, left, water, dropped, run over, toppled over, fungus, etc.

Be careful who you choose to go with - though they should all be around the same price annually - they don't all protect against the same thing (seriously) ...

Not all riders / companies cover lens fungus ... Water damage ... (those are the two majors I can think of right now).

Ideally, you're looking for a company that offers an "All Risk" policy with no deductible.

As late as I am with this - I hope it still helps or helps someone else.
