I had a very interesting conversation recently with a very nice couple, both of whom are strongly opposed to anyone having firearms. They brought up all the usual arguments against private gun ownership, without changing my mind. I brought up all the usual arguments in favor of private gun ownership, without changing their minds.

Being a considerate and caring person, I then promised them that I would never, under any circumstances whatsoever, use my firearms to help them, protect them, or intervene in any incident involving them, no matter how terrible a crime might be perpetrated against them. And, if at all possible, that I would bring their feelings to the attention of anyone else (including law enforcement officers responding to their home) their adamant opposition to guns, and request that other people not bring firearms onto their property for any reason.

I feel better now. I know that I have made them feel much safer in the neighborhood.

Excellent plan. How did they respond to you respecting their personal position ? Also, I'd keep some NRA membership application forms handy in case they become victims of a violent crime .

People who depend on other people to protect them are called "children".

"very nice couple" Sounds more like a very polite couple to me. If you don't want me to own guns, you're not very nice, and I'm not either. I think they need a sign in their front yard explaining their position on the issue. I'm sure the local hoods would greatly appreciate it.

I'm sure you must have seen that email with the guy who went thru the same thing with his neighbors. He had a big arrow pointing to his neighbors expressing the same phiosophy. He stated the same as you, but in 8" letters on a 3'x4' sign on his front lawn.

One of the strangest men I have ever met was an old girlfriend's father.. a big time conservative... except when it came to guns...

He didn't dislike guns... actually he loved them... as long as he was the only one who could buy them. He'd always complain about how easy it was for "punks to get guns these days" and favored restrictions on gun ownership... as long as the law would exclude revolvers and rifles, since that was what he liked... and as long as it didn't effect anyone over 50, since he was right around that age.

I can't tell you how many times I stared at him with my mouth half open as he explained his idea for gun control.... I never could understand that guy...

Now my current girlfriend's father.. well we didn't talk all that much until we realized we both love guns... now that's 80% of what we talk about! :)
