Had a 17 & 18 pound hammer spring for a 3904 and wanted to replace the one that's in there.

The "original" spring was silver color and fits nicely with no problem replacing the grips.

The two Wolff replacements, labeled for 3904, are dark-colored and longer. But only a bit longer. But long enough that it seems impossible to seat the grips. The spring and strut seem to "buckle" a bit, and I cannot (gently) force the grips on so I can replace the pin.

Do I have the wrong springs? Is this a common problem? Am I missing something in what I'm doing? I've replaced a bunch of hammer springs on a bunch of different guns, but this one has me flummoxed.

Sounds like you have the wrong springs, this is not the first time I've heard of Wolff springs being mislabeled.

All of the 2nd and 3rd gen models with the full length grip, whether 9mm, .40, .45, or 10mm, use the same 20lb spec mainspring (hammer spring).

I've not tried any of the lighter weight springs in my guns, but have installed 22 and 23lb Wolff mainsprings in my .357Sig conversions and those have proven very difficult to seat the grips initially.
