Irons or red dot?

So I asked the question a couple weeks ago about red dot choices for my 15-22's. I've recently been toying with the idea of swapping out the iron sights on the Pistol version I've got instead of a red dot but wanted to get the opinion of group. My rifle has a 1.5-6 power on it currently so keeping in mind $$ is a factor, I've been thinking either a PA micro or one of those G&P EoTech knock offs.

So what do you guys think? I'm holding back saying what my thoughts for irons are because I'm hoping to be "original" with the idea.

I think target acquisition would obviously be easier with the red dot but I just can't decide what model to go for. We need more pics of custom Pistol variants so i can get some ideas.

Thanks for the input in advance!

Im looking for a red dot too. I have a truglo right now that is ok but I want something that has X2 or x3 magnification without using a magnifier. Me personally would take a red dot over irion sights anyday

hate to be 'that guy' but there are ast least 3 other threads talking about this exact issue!

i will give you the highlights as i have been a participant in the others....

1)Cheap 'clone' optics are usually unlicensed chinese knockoff garbage--they are not worth the time or money in most cases

2) Buy Cheap Buy twice ( or more)

3) there are several options of AMERICAN products that are quite reasonably priced for the quality--and from honest reputable companies who actually stand behind the gear they sell: Google Opticsplanet or Primary Arms...

I personally have a $110 reflex sight By SightMark from Scheels--this is until i acquire a Trijicon a buddy will be selling this winter--and it works great!

Bottomline...you inversted a substantial amount of money in a rifle/ammo/magazines and a great deal of time in research--use it to your advantage and find something worth it

Primary Arms is Chinese made. And Aimpoint is not American either, as long as we're talking about good optics.

That said, the folks at Primary Arms are great to deal with and stand behind their product. Since the pistol version of the 15-22 is likely to be held a lot further from the face than a standard nose-to-charging-handle rifle hold, I would recommend getting a red dot with a larger objective over the micro.

If you want an EOTech style sight be sure you're buying from a company that will take care of you, such as RRAGES.com

or just save until you can afford an EOtech ( used maybe) instead of buying a knock-off...

For a pistol there is no cheek weld considerations so I would toss the AR sights and pass on the tall EOTech, and just get the low mount PA MicroDot. I would add a green laser because the 15-22p is fun to shoot from the hip.

I use the PA MicroDot on my Ruger pistol. RustPot is right about the measured field of view being significantly less when mounted on a pistol at arms length. However, it has never been an issue for me. I shoot with both eyes open and the scope housing just kinda fades away when I shoot.... I mean it's there... but it just doesn't get in the way for the type of shooting I do at cans and junk, and steel flip targets. Never really gave it much thought... but looking out my window at the mailbox (25yds) I'd say the field of view is pretty close to 3 feet.

There's also the Primary Arms reflex sight. It's very similar to the Burris Fastfire, which is a commonly used pistol dot.

My "cheap clone" of the Aimpoint CompMx works just fine on my M&P15-22, and is all the optics a plinker deserves. I can mount it in the same location and get the same sight pictures as with my 5.56mm M4 Carbine.

Put your money on "real" optics for your "real" rifle.

The optics on the real CompM are crystal clear but a little dim on the clone. Vast difference in price -- and real use.

this is an example of a 'legit' clone...not a cheap unlicensed knockoff--some confusion exists over whats considered a 'clone' and whats considered a knockoff--this is a 'clone' built by an American Company not come Chinese scammer making money on somebody elses idea

buddy has one of these on his 10/22 Archangel and loves it...

Bushnell tr25 is one hell of a red dot for the money...I'm in love with mine.

i have been using the $90 Primary arms aim point clone the m3 version with the high cant mount

Few K rounds still zero
right out the box on the mount it was 1 or 2 clicks off at 30 yrds

honestly i have really enjoyed it looks awsome every one at the range always says nice aim point

has 4 reticules dot/cross/circle dot/circle cross

battery life is good if you turn it off m3 models takes cr m4 model takes aa

it is what it is you dont need a high priced optic for a 15-22

I agree, just bought a PA M4 red dot for my 15 22, and I love it. One click to the right and a few clicks up and I was perfect. PA is a great company!!

I put the $30 UTG Leapers 38mm Red Green Dot Sight from amazon on my 15-22 and took it to the range last Friday - I've been using the stock iron sights up till now.

The zeroing was way, way off out of the box (what were they thinking) but once calibrated at 50 yards, the sight performed flawlessly. Having the option of that green dot in bright conditions is REAL useful.

We'll see how this sight performs over time - so far I'm more than impressed.

I put $80 dot sights like the Sightmark shown on my M&P15-22 into the "cheap" category and into the "clone" category as they completely mimic the Aimpoint CompM-series. It may be one of the better "cheap clones" though. I'm quite happy with the Sightmark. For what it is. It ain't an Aimpoint CompM but at least operates and looks like one.

I've been finding the button batteries in bulk at the gun shows. Sure don't want to buy them at Radio Shack prices.

Aimpoint is made in Sweden. I have 3. Rock solid optics. Two are mounted on my Colt.

But on my 15-22 I have been using a Bushnell red/green T-dot. Works very well. I run Bushnell on all my .22 rifles.
Primary Arms optics are good altho the mounts will need to be replaced.
