If you are just traveling through to pick up your wife and you are legally able to possess a firearm at the start and end of your journey then federal law prevents the state or local laws from prohibiting you from transporting a firearm provided you follow the transportation methods described in federal law.

18 U.S. Code § 926A - Interstate transportation of firearms

Notwithstanding any other provision of any law or any rule or regulation of a State or any political subdivision thereof, any person who is not otherwise prohibited by this chapter from transporting, shipping, or receiving a firearm shall be entitled to transport a firearm for any lawful purpose from any place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm to any other place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm if, during such transportation the firearm is unloaded, and neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle: Provided, That in the case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver’s compartment the firearm or ammunition shall be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console.

So, fly to Philly, declare the gun, take it & store it in Pa. Then go to NJ, get the wife & car, stop back in Pa and continue home from Pa with wife, car and gun.

Don't bring it NJ, they have no sense of humor there.

Those are nice but some states don't recognize them. Meaning they don't care and while you may ultimately win in the mean time you will have an extended stay at the gov expense

Don't frat. Philly international has nothing around it. It once was a small island. So it's not like you're in the center of the city, which BTW is very safe. The closest thing to Philly international is center city which is the business district, Dimond district and where all the old money is. So there isn't much to be afraid of unless you fear Fontzworth the IV was let out of his 8k sq ft pent house with his SxS. I can't say much for Jersey since I don't know where you'll be going. Having said that I'm in Jersey weekly for work and at one point I used to do repossessions in the ghettos....obviously without guns. I've never had a problem and chances of you having a problem is practically nill. It's not exactly Mad Max out here.

In my opinion if you made it to 21 without daily carry you can make this drive just fine. BTW I've done it a few times without a gun. Not much happens at 70mph aside from time going by

Where specifically in NJ?

If it's not Newark or Jersey City, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I was just down in NJ two weeks ago for my Uncle's funeral service. It is not a great place to drive through.

I have 1.8 Million miles driving a truck around our great nation. Unequivocally Newark NJ is the filthiest place in the nation. I have been to every metropolitan area in the USA and that place is a cesspool. I have a cush job now and actually am going to the poorest neighborhood in Detroit tomorrow, I am going to hand unload 35,000lbs of freight. I still would still prefer it over Newark.

After retiring from the PD I worked for the Federal Gov't in DC for seven years. It was a good job w/excellent pay and benefits and b/c of my military time and age I got a second pension, but I could not carry under any circumstance when working. It was a firing offense to bring a gun into the office so I did the smart thing and left the gun home except on weekends. Chances are you will be okay but I do understand how you feel.

Perfect excuse ! Honey, things were looking sketchy and you do want me to come back unharmed ...right ! I had to buy it.

Yo bro, understand that thousands of folks do the same everyday. I'll assume that 99% of them safely arrive at their destination safe and sound.

As for feeling naked, just remember to keep your pants on, as most people you may come into contact with have little or no desire to see you with out some sort of clothing on:D.

As Bobby Mcfferrin once opined, "Don't Worry Be Happy"

One more caveat... If you have a concealed carry permit in Florida, and are driving your own car, don't drive thru Md with a handgun, or with any ammo anywhere in the vehicle, regardless of what the law says.

You likely will lose your handgun, and be a convicted felon before you leave the state.

They search on the Florida plate (and maybe other states) licenses, check against their "registry" (which should not be available to them), and , if you are a CCW, it's an automatic "stop-and search".

I have relatives in Md. If they want to see me, it's in another state. I don't willingly go where I'm not welcome.

^ That is not a lawful basis for a search, and it ain't gonna happen. Admittedly, MD is on my NFE list anyway.

The safest answer for the OP is that the wife rents a car in Jersey and meets you in PA. Considering that the odds of a lawful search are about zero anyway, I'd lock the pistol in a container in the trunk and drive on. The number of people who end up getting their vehicle searched without having done something REALLY STOOOPID is almost no one. And anyone who ever consents is a darned fool.

"What is the rough percentage of times you've needed a weapon on that trip before? Don't stress- the odds are in your favor." Completely the wrong answer as a matter of defensive philosophy. Period. You cannot make an appointment for an emergency.

as soon as you cross the new jersey state line. find a gun store, get out of the car, go in the store, buy a gun and ammo...........your nakedness will disappear and you will, once again, be at peace with the world.......have a nice day....

Granted, but defensive philosophy is only one of many metrics -- sometimes competing -- by which we assess our comings and goings. Occasionally, there's few good choices and we have to elect not to carry or risk arrest and charges that can mean never legally owning or carrying again -- a risk not worth it to many of us.

When in such a situation, it's helpful to remember that the overwhelming majority of Americans on any given day go about their business unarmed and experience exactly zero fallout for it.

In other words, if you have to disarm briefly, it's comforting knowing that statistically the odds are massively in your favor for having a good day nonetheless. ;)
