Going to the bank to discuss a loan and on the laundry list of things to take was a signed version of this form if you e-filed your taxes the last two years. I did my stuff through Turbo Tax and I can find no mention of this form in the stuff I saved. Any clues?

The IRS website hints it is a form I would sign if going to somebody else to e-file, like H&R Block.

Form 8879 is not used when you file your tax return yourself with TurboTax. You don't have to authorize yourself to file your own tax return. Form 8879 is used only to authorize a paid tax preparer to file your return for you. If someone is asking you for Form 8879, either they think you paid someone to do your tax return, or they don't understand how tax returns are filed.

Do you realize there are 8878 IRS forms that came before it.:rolleyes:

Makes me wonder why we allow a tax code that uses over 8,000 separate forms, not to mention the endless "schedules" and other nonsense. My tax returns are done on paper, and now cost close to $2 just to mail in. Ridiculous.

Lawyers write that stuff, many reasons, here are just a couple!

Sometimes to help out certain people, sometimes to make more work for brother lawyers.

Considering that Form 8879 isn't filed with the IRS but rather is kept by the taxpayer with their retained copy of the filed tax return, why does the mortgage company need it ?

There are several very obscure IRS forms. There is one informational form I must file every year, even though it never changes in any respect. It has to do with a real estate transaction of many years ago. I just made a batch of copies of that one long ago and stick one in with the rest before I send everything in. I think there is a $100 fine if I don't include it. TY 2015 is the last time I will have to submit it.

I don't know how many IRS forms there are, but I don't think the form number indicates anything about the total number. I file three or four in the 8000 series. I think it works like 1xxx forms mean something, 2xxx forms mean something else, and so on, with far less than 1000 in each block, i.e., the form number is really a type of IRS identification code.

Did you know it is possible to get money back from the IRS. Our preparer seem excited and used the word "refund". We went home and looked it up.
