Is a 317 really a 317?

Of course it is, but should it be? You have a model 17 which is a K frame and a 617 which is the stainless variant of it. So why is the 317 an airlite version of the J frame model 63 instead of the 17? Which leads me to ask, why isn't their a lightweight version of the 17? I would really like to have a light 22 but in a 10 shot K frame, not a J.

The model numbering system doesn't always make sense; the 317 should probably be the 343. As far as an alloy-frame 617, how about posting on the Wish List?
