Is it possible to add a dust cover to the M&P 15 sport??

The Sport upper has proven to be one of the most reliable setups I've seen. It takes a lot for a Sport not to run....especially in the hands of us civilians. The dust cover is not a necessity. I have it on my Palmetto, but I don't miss it one bit on the Sport.

If your concern is looks, if you are into form over function, perhaps a dust cover is a "must have".

However, if you want an efficient tool, if you believe in function rather than form, a dust cover is not necessary. I have two nephews who, between them, have over 15 years in Iraq and Afghanistan. When considering the Sport I asked both of them about the cover and the FA. Both said they had NEVER used either.

I am now the happy owner of three dustcover-less and forward assist-less S&W Sports.

Yup. Primary is looks for me. Tacticool guy here, well not zealously. I definitely dont stack on the sights light lazers and such. Dust covet and FA are not a necessity. Just recharge the bolt if something gets stuck. Thats what you do at the end of sports anyways.

Not unless the nubs for the cover are on the upper, which I don't think they are. No nubs, nothing to hold the pin that holds the cover.

I think the feed ramp is part of the barrel extension. As far as mil spec having M4 ramps, it would depend on what mil spec it is built to.

On the YHM upper I put on my Sport, there are M4 ramps cut in to it to match the feed ramps on the barrel extension. Mind you that M4 ramps cut on the upper is not necessarily going to make the round feed better in the chamber on semi auto AR, I do think they where used more for full auto AR's. :)

M4 ramps help feeding with the carbine gas system and the associated quicker cycle time. These days it is more the norm not the exception. Even most 20" rifle uppers use M4 ramps.

And we have out answer. And I learned something new. :)

does it really matter to have one?

One thing to keep in mind, the dust cover is a relatively new invention. Up until WWII, none had one. Look at the old bolt guns and lever actions. None of them had/have a cover. The M1 Garand has one but I think that is the earliest example. At least that I can think of off hand. So, it really isn't needed but if I were crawling through the mud and the muck, especially with a rifle that likes a wet bolt, I would much rather have a cover than not.
