Is there any police department anywhere in the U.S. that anybody knows of that still requires and/or issues revolvers as their primary sidearm?

Many State's Department of Corrections still issue or use some revolvers. North Dakota DOCR still has some in use.

As of late '07, the Diplomatic Security Service was carrying what appeared to be K-frame S&W's of some sort. These are the police agency is charge of security for Department of State. I asked a guy about it, and he said they were going to the M-9 in the future. I imagine they have probably converted by now, but you never know.

Last August, my Step-Mother passed away, and one of her Grand Daughters was a guest of the State of Virginia, serving the last days of an eight year sentence for selling marijuana. She was escorted to the funeral by two female Correctional Officers, each carrying 4" S&W Model 64's.

The funeral was on a Saturday, she was due to be released the next Tuesday, but the only slack she got was to attend the funeral shackled at the waist and escorted by two prison gaurds. I don't think she had been a model prisoner, I talked to the two Correctional Officers before the funeral, they were actually pretty pleasant, they said the Warden had given them some specific instructions regarding the funeral visit, no stopping for even a potty break.

The Grand Daughter served every single day of her eight year sentence, no time off for good behaviuor or even a funeral.

I think with more "non-gun" people becoming LEO's you may see a resurgance of revolvers for duty weapons.

I was in court yesterday (I'm a lawyer) and I noticed three deputies who were there to help guard prisoners had revolvers in their holsters. I just caught a quick glimpse but they looked like stainless L or K frames. The other deputies were carrying Glocks. So, I'd say my local department must be open to letting its officers carry what they want. (BTW, one of the deputies carrying a revolver was female.)

When I retired from the Florida DOC four years ago, the agency issued S&W model 15's for perimeter patrol and transporting prisoners. However, those transport officers that qualified in the firearms 3-day course for the semi-auto S&W 5906 by the Departmental Firearm instructors, were authorized to carry on transport. Also, they were to qualifty on the yearly firearms qualification for both the S&W model 15 and 5906.

We have to carry Glock 22 .40's, but I would be comfortable with an 8 shot N frame given I could effectively carry three or four full moon clips on my duty belt. Of course that will never happen. We spend slightly less than $400 on our Glock 22's if I am not mistaken.

My S.O. gives us a choice. .357 wheel gun or .40 auto. Most of the younger deputies carry G22's. Although I own one too, I prefer to carry my Stainless 586 with Pach's.

In NC I don't know of any law enforcement agency that "requires" revolvers. In fact, I do know a couple that actually prohibit revolvers - even as BUG's.

That said, many agencies allow the use of a revolver if you can pass the state qualification course with one. While I still occasionally use a 66, there are a couple of officers locally using model 19's and 65's.

Pre lock 442's, 642's and model 60's are poular BUG's. The two local police departments prohibit IL equipped revolvers.

I've qualified with my 3" 66, as well as a 3" 13-3 for on/off duty.

More often than not I only carry them off duty. Most agencies around me use 45 semi auto's. Regards 18DAI.

Sheriffoconee, I like your style. When I see a LEO carrying a revolver I think "there's a guy who probably knows his guns."

One aspect is that a "revolver mandate" would discriminate against women potential officers who have smaller hands which don't fit a revo. I have read some PDs qualified Browning Hi Powers expressly because of their smaller trigger reach to give women a fair chance to qualify.

LOL! "Just how you roll" I like how you put that. What kind of N frame?

I FINALLY got a set of stocks that will let me carry my 58 on duty. I couldn't risk the PC magnas that came with it, since they are about 99%, and the gun itself is about 95+% and N frame targets I had on it just didn't do it justice.
The N frame I have carried the most is my 22-4. I know it is a new, inspired by the devil N frame with CNC milling and a lock, but I like it a lot, it shoots well....and I like the moonclips

I recently saw an SFPD officer carrying a revolver downtown on Mission St. He was very fit and probably in his late 40s. I asked him about it, and he said that he "qualified for both", the other being a Sig.

See them in Philly although it may be a grandfathering issue as the officers don't appear to be new recruits.
