My wife and I have a new grand baby in VA Beach. A just married daughter in Grottoes, VA and a son in Statesville, NC. We also have kids in Chattanooga, Atlanta, and NYC. But her daughter's, daughter is in VA Beach and right now that trumps everything. Grand mommy is want to get as close to the baby as possible but Grumps is holding out for the mountains. I can't do the heat, humidity, traffic and crowds. Wife is insisting on no more than a four hour drive. I am thinking Lexington, VA. Does anyone have knowledge of that area? How is the hunting, fishing, shooting? I went on line and found the Blue Ridge Rifle Club and sent an email, but no response so far. Seems to me VA as a whole is turning more blue. I even read a post from 2007 that said the Rockbridge county (Lexington) was debating shooting on ones own property. I haven't been able to determine how that shook out. We are presently in gun friendly WV with plenty of hunting and shooting opportunities but I ain't going to win this one.

I think Virginia ranks toward the top of gun friendly states, we have "Must Issue" concealed carry permits, no onerous magazine capacity or assault rifle limitations. Plenty of opportunities to hunt, lots of ranges to shoot and compete, IDPA events in abundance.

That being said, it seems the closer you get to dense urban areas like Northern Virginia you will find folks that don't like guns. If I were looking to buy a place in Virginia, I'd pick a spot in the hilly parts, away from Northern Virginia, and buy enough property to have your own range.

The area around Lexington is nice, area to the west of Lexington are even nicer.

Like VA prior to the civil war (before VA and WV split), VA is once again better regarded as two states.

There is northern VA, where it is just as unfriendly as the county governments can make it regarding guns and there is the rest of VA where the states' gun friendly laws still prevail.

The thing is that most of the population growth is in northern VA and the state is moving increasingly to the left as NOVA pics up an increasing percentage of left leaning votes.

Sooner or later, VA is going to fall farther and farther down the list of gun friendly states, but even now it's close enough to center on gun issues that you'll see some very un gun friendly executive actions.

The Governor and AG are flaming gun haters. I set up in Hillsville Va labor day flea mkt and gunshow. a gunshow inside that spills onto the neighboring properties outside. This has been a great venue since 1960. Governor said last yr, no outdoor sales of firearms. Nothing came of that, but the ATF was around at the Memorial day event harassing the gun table holders. Expect the same this labor day.

The AG pronounced earlier this yr that they would not honor out of state CCL. That lasted only a month or so until pressure got it reversed, but that's the trend.

I've always heard it said that there are 2 Maryland's and 2 Virginia's......

In Maryland once the Baltimore/DC area could they imposed their feelings/gun restrictions on the Western part of the state...... which is more like Pa. and W. Va.

Deep Creek has become a weekend retreat for Baltimore/DC's elite......................................

I can see the same happening in Va. as the DC suburbs spread..........over the past 20 years DC is spreading down 95 and west towards Winchester..... in our brave new world..... it's only a matter of time till that town will be facing a politically correct name change :D........

As a footnote ........ they say the same about Pa........ there's Philly (and it's burbs) and the City of Pittsburgh ....... and a T shaped Alabama in the middle!

Pennsylvania has 67 counties, 56 are very gun friendly, 8 are somewhat left leaning, Allegheny county (Pittsburgh) is anti-handgun and Philadelphia is anti any gun, knife, nailcippers, etc. I wish PA would just give Philly to New Jersey. Unfortunately, those 10 left leaning counties hold enough votes to reliably swing PA to "blue state" status.

Mathews County is a great rural community for what you are looking for. The only drawback will be the heat and humidity. But it has great people, hunting, fishing, gun-friendly, and almost no traffic. And since you are already going to lose, it's about 90 minutes from VA Beach.

Thanks for the input. Not exactly what I wanted to hear but pretty much what I expected.

I use to live in Princeton, WV. The Hillsville gun show was a much anticipated event.
