I'm catching up on posting acquisitions from the last couple months. The "incentive" was picking up a new 60 yesterday and posting my story about acquiring it. I figured I'd take a couple photos of each and show off.
Anyway, I was browsing GB last month and came across this. It's a 2" 15-2. It looked to be in sorta OK condition, except for one thing - a previous owner Cerakoted it. Blasphemy, I know.
Ordinarily, I'd pass on a painted gun. I hate Cerakote on a revolver! Yuck!
But one thing jumped out when I looked at the photos: my old badge number, right there on the butt of the gun.
No, I never owned this one; my number wasn't scratched on it. It's the serial number. K797953. My PD badge number was 79-53. Weird, right?
Well, that was enough for me. I watched the auction for the rest of the week and bid in the last hour. Got it for their starting bid, $375. (I think they were pricing it low because of the paint, no?)
It actually didn't look all that terrible when it showed up at the neighborhood FFL's place. The action is pristine. No endshake, tight lockup, smooth action. The silvery color kinda-sorta grows on you. It does seem to have a slightly different tone on the cylinder, trigger and hammer, noticeable in person but not weird like that green-frame, black cylinder gun I saw somewhere here on the Forum a while back. No noticeable flaws like pitting, etc., that you'd expect when someone's trying to cover up damage. (I noticed that the screws were put back in the wrong place, but I haven't had a chance to correct it yet.)
It had some big ol' Thai wood grips on it, nice ones, too, but I recently bought some Vintage brand hard rubber boot grips from a Forum member and decided this was a good home for them. I like the combination, and it's not like rubbers are gonna desecrate this fine example of S&W art any worse than painting it, am I right?
Anyway, a couple photos for your amusement. Thanks for reading.
