I received an Iver Johnsons top break revolver from my Grandfather. It has a hammer and the cylinder spins freely and holds 5 rounds, of what caliber I'm not sure. The serial number on the handle is: N25261. From this serial number, can anyone tell me what caliber this is and how old it is

I can't be sure without pics and/or more info, but it very well may be a .32 caliber, or possibly a .38.

dgordon, Welcome to the Forum. The N code Iver Johnson revolvers were made, beginning in 1905, on the small frame .32 caliber guns. The serial numbers ran fron N10,000 to N 100,000. Ed.

Old I. J. revolvers were very low-priced but fairly serviceable guns when new. But if you are thinking of shooting yours, have someone who knows guns look it over first. You can get hurt if it "lets go" or the cylinder doesn't index fully.

According to William Goforths book on IJs your gun is a small frame .32 (.32 S&W) and was made in 1905

oops just noticed that ed beat me to it :)
