I got an Alien Gear 1.0 Cloak Tuck today for my Shield w/ Viridian Laser and after adjusting the retention I tried to put it on and after a lot of gyrations, I had to take my pants down to my knees to situate the holster where I wanted it.

I mostly have used a Safariland paddle or Desantis Slim Tuk IWB that mount and dismount with ease.

The question: Does it get easier to don and doff these style holsters with everyday experience, or is it an unending PITA?

Alien Gear has a 30-day test drive warranty, so I can send it back if it's too onerous.

I have a similar style holster, but not an AG brand. Practice will make things better.

If you have the metal clips yes it will get easier. You will also learn where it feels most comfortable for you and be able to replicate it pretty easy after time. I’ve had several since they were introduced and although I own other brands as well I still use my AG

I don’t have that brand, but do have one in a similar style. It does get easier, and they are extremely comfortable. However, nothing beats a nice leather holster imo. I don’t mind hybrid holsters in hot weather though

I've worn an AG Cloak Tuck for about a year now. You will get used to it. I've learned for different styles of pant where to position the front clip in relation to the pocket. Once you do that, it's easy to reach around to clip the back clip. Once you find that sweet spot, the holster is comfortable and you forget you're wearing it....especially if you also wear a good belt.

Once you find that perfect spot for the holster to ride, it gets much easier. Putting these style holsters on is part of getting dressed. Once you know where it goes, before you pull your pants up, hook the clips over the pants top and belt, then pull your pants up, zip the zipper, fasten the button or snap, and your belt. Install the gun in place, and away you go. If you have to go in somewhere that you can't take the gun, simply remove the gun and secure it in your vehicle. It's not illegal to wear a holster anywhere. Once you get that rascal broke in and adjusted to your liking, you'll forget you even have it on. Good luck and good shooting.

Thanks for the advice guys! I'll give this style a fair hearing.

Alien gear makes a quality product, but I also preferred leather backings over their neoprene backings. I thought the leather backings were a lot more comfortable once broken in. Horsehide easily takes the cake.

I don't use AG but I do have one. Yes it gets easier once you figure out where you like it. Some clips are stronger than others and some belts are wider and thicker but it takes a second to take off. However if you have to reposition it then you have to at the least undo your pants. But unless there's something weird going on you shouldn't have to do that.

The Neoprene backing is Scuba material and tends to stay put if placed against the skin. Waterproof and comfortable against the skin for me.

I found the neoprene to cause me to sweat a lot more and stick when working outside. It’s why I went back to the leather. Still have that one sitting in the safe

I have not yet committed to a hybrid. But I am heavily leaning towards Black Arch holster Protus M. What I like is their wicking breathable technology. The Protus has kydex wrap around trigger guard for more protection and more consistent retention. It is also about double the price of the AG.

That's a super nice holster the first I've heard of it but why the oblong cut out in the kydex around the chamber going down towards the barrel?

Maybe just an aesthetic accent.

That's their Protos-M model, which allow it to convert to different carry styles. That slot is to attach a belt clip for a different IWB carry method.
