I believe the third pin on the hand was added around 1997 in the J frame models, and may have occurred across the board in all models at that time.
The pin keeps the hand positioned properly in the hand window during recoil and this added pin acts as an additional "bolt stop", and prevents the bolt/thumbpiece assembly from moving forward under recoil. With the hammer cocked in SA or the trigger back in DA, this pin is positioned in front of the front leg of the bolt, between the bolt leg and the frame, and stays there until the trigger is released, and the hand drops back down.
The only hint I can find in terms of the date this change was made is the note "change internal lockwork" in the Catalog. (96-97)
Not sure if this is indicative of this particular change though.
