j frame threads question

Just got a m36 from middle 60's and it hard to open the cyl. I disassembled the cyl and it was hard to unthread the ejector rods. I believe someone didn't know they were left threaded and reasembled wrong. Does any one know the thread size for tap and die or do i need to order replacement parts?

Do an internet search! McMaster-Carr does not have a 10-48 in it's left-handed tap or die selections.

No one I know of offers a LH 10-48 as a stock item. These folks will quote custom taps, and I'm sure there are others.

^^Thanks I saw that on my expedition; almost afraid to find out how much that one-off tap is going to set me back.

I sourced a new 10-48 LH split die for $20 which i considered a deal.
Ebay new 3-piece 10-48 RH tap set $35.

As noted above also, a lot of 10-48 LH bottom taps which are less useful for me.

Why is a Bottoming Tap useless?
If you can't find a Starter (or Plug tap) in that LH TPI,,then one can be made from the available Bottoming Tap.
You can easily grind a taper or 'lead' on the tap and it becomes a Starter or a Plug tap depending on how much lead you give it.

If it truly was forced together or retapped RH threads, re tapping to left hand won’t leave you much. I would look for new parts, which you will probably need anyway.

Ditto. I'd just buy a new extractor rather than try to clean up messed-up threads, especially in a thin wall part.
