Well I just wasted my time, money and gas this morning by going to a job fair in my quest to end my unemployment. The job fair was promoted by the Arizona Republic (Phoenix's major fishwrap) and Career Builder and promoted as being for technical/professionals. There were a dozen different categories advertised including design/development, civil engineering, project management, and construction management.

I'm skeptical of job fairs to begin with, usually a lot of minimum wage, sales and independent contracting promotions. With the pre-qualification and requirements for attendees, I thought this one might be a little different. My first clue should have been while I was waiting in line that stretched out past the pre-function space, through the lobby, out the door and around the corner of the building was that there was a steady stream of people leaving the building.

I finally get up to the registration desk and actually had to argue with the receptionist that a Bachelor of Architecture and 15 years experience in construction management is a technical background and I should be let in. Get through that to be handed a sheet with the list of employers at the fair, a total of 5. They were all very highly specialized defense contractors primarily looking for IT geeks. Get into the ballroom and it is a section that is partioned off and is only 30'x60' space.

The one I did talk to was looking for airborne qualified stag line jumpers. I thought what the hell, it's been a long time but I went through Airborne School, for a few hundred bucks I'll go jump out of a plane again. Nope, minimum hourly wage jumping with prototype parachutes in the R&D stages. Yep that's right; part time, minimum wage and no benefits for being a test dummy on an experimental parachute.

So in short, 2-3,000 people show up for a job fair with only 5 prospective employers that are not offering anything that was advertised. A lot of extremely pissed off people and disgusted people out in the parking lot as I was leaving. I feel like sending the Republic a bill for my time and gas.

Yeah, I got laid off back in November after 45 years in manufacturing. I though things would pick up first of the year but that didn't happen so I just retired. It is working much better than I expected. I won't even have to practice saying "welcome to Wall-Mart, do you want a buggy"

The residential and commercial construction business has boomed here for many years, and I know several commercial contractors that said they would not take on any new projects till they started catching up on old business. Residential slacked off about 6 months ago and commercial is just now really slowing down. Its getting a bit scary all of the sudden.

The one I did talk to was looking for airborne qualified <STRIKE>stag</STRIKE> static line jumpers.

Fixed one typo for you!

Wonder if this position has a high turnover rate, and if the medical benefits and workman's comp is very good?

In a very similar career as you, but 2X the years in the trade, but decided to branch out and do some consulting work and a few other things. so far so good, but slow starting, which could be good!
Good luck, and thanks for the story about the job fair, good warning!

I went to two job fairs several years ago when I was between jobs. You'd have to offer me a really nice M-17 at a really low price to get me to go to another one.

I'm sorry your experience wasn't a good one.

Is relocation an option? If so, parts of the country (like Oklahoma and Texas) aren't feeling the recession like other parts.

.

Umm, why would they use people for that instead of crash test dummies? Oh wait, crash test dummies cost money.

to see two Blue Collar references in one thread.... thats funny, I don't care who you are. Thats funny right there.

Okay, I got an idea.
We put the experimental parachutes on illegal aliens and drop them back over the border.
Heck, I don't care if they didn't originally come from Mexico. Even if they're from Belgium or Cambodia, let's let Mexico deal with them.
Anyway, we put the chutes on them and drop them over Mexico, then videotape the test from our side of the border!
"Okay ... that design's good ... filling out quite nicely ... oh wait, that other design? It's streaming ... not filling out ... scratch that design from R&D willya?"

That's one job I don't mind being out-sourced!
