I have doubted my keen memory lately. Without resorting to Google or other reference, Wasn't he a presidential candidate? I'm almost sure he was and think he was a liberal Democrat in the '70s. Maybe a third party hopeful. How clear are your thoughts? Don't cheat.

John is from Apopka Florida. a town a little Northwest of Orlando

Ah well. Always nice when folks fib to you. Back in 80, when he was starting to get popular, I worked construction with a boy from Arcadia, and he said Anderson was from his home town. I had no reason to doubt the statement, and have thought that's where he was from for the past 33 years.
