John Westley Hardin

Whe the Gene Autry museum last year I saw the Hardin guns again. In the case is Hardin's .45 (behind George Scarborough's shotgun), The plain .45 Selman used to kill Hardin, and the pearl handled .45 Scarborough used to kill Selman. I spent some time gawking at these amazing historical guns used by three very tough Texans.

I wonder what would have happened to Patton if he had told Scarborough that his pearl handled pistol looked like something a New Orleans pimp would carry. Larry

I have gathered that Mr. Hardin was rather easy to rile.

According to a Time-Life commercialfrom the late 70s or early 80s?that was advertising a series of books on the Wild West--the Commentater said that John Wesley Hardin killed a man "Just For Snoring Too Loud." I always thought that bit of the commercial was funny. :D

I had that book. In his auto biography he described the incident. He was in a hotel and some drummer was in the next room snoring keeping him awake. He said he shot through the wall and the snoring subsided for the night. Since then I have read accounts that he killed the guy. Could have I guess but somehow I think others read that and ran with it.

I remember that...

The ad does make it sound like he got up, grabbed his gun, walked over to the snorer and shot him dead.:D

At least in the Time Life book itself they told the truth.

I cant accurately remember the entire comment but I think it was: "John Wesley Hardin was so mean that he killed a man, Just For Snoring Too Loud."

As Oldnavymcpo says, he is buried in Concordia Cemetery. There's a six inch slab of poured concrete above it to insure the burial won't be disturbed; there was talk some years ago of his birthplace wanting him reinterred there for a tourist attraction, hence the slab. It's not uncommon to find in the morning a couple of shot glasses of whiskey left at his gravesite, or a pair of dice with the number he had just rolled when he was shot ( I forget the number, but his last words were "that's a ??? for you to beat")

I read that John Selman said John Wesley Hardin saw him in the large mirror behind the bar and started going for his gun and that was how he got away with shooting Hardin in the back of the head.
