Well I finally joined the black rifle club. Picked up a S&W MP15 Sport on Thursday for $618.00. I know it is entry level, and that is ok with me. I had a hard time dropping $800-$1000+ plus on a rifle that I wasn't even sure I would like.

Wow was I wrong on the "not sure I would like" it part. I can not believe I waited this long to get one. Spent the afternoon at the range, and ran a 100 rounds through it. Very pleased. I did have about 4 issues of it not picking up the next round, but two of those times my sister was shooting it left handed. I may have also been running it a little dry, hard to wet one down when you shoot Glocks.

So now comes the optics adventure, will probably start with a Vortex StrikeFire Red Dot Scope.

Still need to pick up a few more Pmags, and lots of ammo.

Congrats! I joined this weekend as well. Already had a 15-22, so I was already aware of the addiction. I'd been wanting to get a .223 and hadn't really thought about the AR until this weekend's gun show. Too many, and apparently too tempting! I picked up the M&P 15A, selection was overwhelming, hadn't really researched the AR that much, but this one was on sale for 870.00 so I decided it was going to be good enough (liked the 15X better, but it was 1179, for the difference, I can afford to swap out for a quad rail!).

I think you got a good buy on that Sport, I saw two at the show early, both sold before I had realized I was going to buy one, both were just under 700.

Dealer I bought mine from was also selling the Black Pmag's for 11 bucks for however many you wanted with gun buy (or in lots of 5 without gun buy). Regular individual price was 11.99, it was a gun show special price, black only. Seems like his regular price (and other color pricing) was around 16 bucks. I picked up a couple extra and a bulldog 40" tactical case (I like these, already had one for my 15-22).

Which mags were giving you an issue picking up the round? And, can you recall, was it early in the cycle, or late?
I have a bunch of Thermold 10 rnd mags for Ca compliant shooting. They are pretty good if you want to use a magazine as a paperweight....... Of the 8 I have, 3 will not properly feed rounds 8 and 9. Go figure. They do this with all types of ammo.
My STANAG and Pmags are good. A hint for those with new Pmags: Load 'em up full and let them sit for a day. It's often a good idea to bounce them on the palm of your hand, like a smoker will hit a pack of cigarettes. It seats the spring when they are brand new. Some of my 308 mags only wanted to take 18 and 19 rounds until they were bounced and crammed full of ammo. After that, they were just fine.

Congrats! It's nice to see S&W is installing the Magpul rear MBUS right off the bat.

Too bad they didn't do that sooner. It would have saved me a few bucks. :)

rojo Thanks for the input. I am only using Magpul Pmags, 2 the one it came with and a new one bought locally. I was only loading 20 rounds at a time, and it would happen at different round counts (near full or down to the last 5 or 6 rounds. I'll try loading up the mags to break in the springs and see what that does..

I bought the 15a also then bought a quad rail handguard to turn it into a 15x. As far as I can tell the quadrail handguard is the only difference between the 15a and the 15x.

You won't be disappointed with your purchase. I love my Sport. I shoot the s*** out of it.

optic costs you! Close to what you payed for the rifle. I use a cheap Tru-Glo reflex site that is durable and accurate and I only paid $39.00! If I broke it today, I got 150% out of it and could not complain. I still have irons to back me up.

I think you were talking about my post, but you're right, the quad rail is the only difference. I really liked the look of the Troy Quad Rail Smith uses on the x.

Yeah I liked the troy rail too but I put a UTG quad rail on mine works great.

Congrats on the new rifle. I wouldn't call it an "Entry Level" anything, they're fine rifles. A friend of mine bought one, and I was the first to fire it. I was really impressed. The weight and accuracy were incredible for a rifle set up this way. I've considered picking one up for the fun of modding it out. Again, Congrats.
