And he had given up on killing him after the plot had failed, only to run into him by accident hours later. Fate can be cruel.

If you haven't listened to it yet, it is worth checking out the podcast "Hardcore History." They have an excellent multi-hour series on this assassination, and it is fascinating.

A few years ago I picked up a Lee-Enfield #1 Mk. III*, "peddled scheme" rifle, dated 1917, in remarkably good condition. It turned out to be fairly collectible. Maybe I have an overactive imagination, but it was part of the insanity and has a bit of a spooky feel to it.

Think I'll check out Tuchman's book on Amazon. This is also very good: World War I: The "Great War"

Glad to see that this got posted. I was going to do it myself had it not been here. Those two murders put into motion world politics that still exist today.

Ferdinand insisted.....

Ferdinand insisted on seeing the people that were injured by the bomb that was meant for him. Being stopped in the street made him an easy target. Princep ran out of a cafe and shot them.

What did Gavrilo Princip use to start that war?

An FN .380...

More precisely a FN Model 1910, SN 19074. There's a good article on it in the current Auto Mag, the journal of the National Automatic Pistol Collectors Association; they also go into what happened to the pistol after the assassination. It's now in the Vienna Museum of Military History. Lot of good stuff in Auto Mag.

I just read on the CNN web site that a statue of Gavrilo Princip, life-sized, was unveiled in Sarajevo today. It was part of a large commemorative event which sounded rather like a celebration.
