Some thoughts and notes on using my 3913 today. May not be all that new for most of the forum folks but a real wake up for me.

1. Practice makes perfect. My range time the past six months has been sporadic at best. Lots of excuses. I need to literally schedule regular range time or it does not happen. Almost all my groupings were down and left – three+ inches from center. Ugh.
2. I took my S&W 3913 today. I love that pistol but also learned some stuff. I'm embarrassed to say I have been carrying that pistol off and on since this summer. I had a Crossbreed Supertuck holster which fits perfectly. However, I did not elect to have the "combat cut". I had never had range time with it. Imagine my shock to see that when I did a fast draw my thumb pinched the inside of the leather to the grip thereby preventing me from drawing – every time! Sooo, back to CrossBreed for some alterations.
3. Generally I carry an Andrews' mag and light pouch on the weak side, of course. I also hang a set of keys and a cell phone there as well. Everything gets crowded so, inadvertently, my pouch was sitting at ten o'clock. Reaching for the second mag, imagine my surprise when I was grasping a set of keys at 8 o'clock. Duh! That won't happen again. Also need to find another arrangement for keys and cell.
4. I was also miffed to see that my trustworthy S&W slipped from unlock to lock in the middle of a shooting exercise. I thought for sure it was just me but I slowed my shooting and watched it slip into lock. Just a bit disconcerting when you pull the trigger and nothing moves. Guess it will be off to the shop.
5. Last night, again, embarrassed to say, I was turning in for the night and de-holstering. I pulled my spare mag to my 3913 and was stunned to see that I was removing a .380 mag from my Sig 232 BUG. I walked around all day with a useless second mag. That really was disconcerting. I am working on a plan to keep the right gun and the right mags in separate cases. Unbelievable! Sloppy is as sloppy does.
6. Lastly, most of my (indoor) range time is shooting 7-21 feet. I do not practice quick draw that often. Wrong! I sorely need to work on quick draw with a 2+1 tactical grouping. I was woefully awkward. True, it did not helping having that holster pinching I first talked about. But still…

Comments welcome.

Was one shot lower left from the rest? How was your DA vs your SA groupings? Did you practice with both?

Was this not an alteration you would be comfortable making yourself? I always make my holsters fit and work for me. I have no problem trimming leather or kydex wherever I need to.

Assuming you are talking about the safety/decocker. If so did you do any testing of the mechanism? Does it move easily like maybe the safety plunger spring is worn? The spring and plunger are cheap parts that can be purchased from a few shops. You may be able to get a stronger one from a 1911 plunger but it needs to be trimmed a bit.

At least you caught it. That would have been a horrible feeling if you figured it out when you needed it most. That being said, I would rather catch my sloppy habits this way than through an ND. I would hazard a guess that 90% of NDs are caused by lax habits and complacency. Great reminder. :D

Will your indoor range allow fast draws and the like? Some of them will not let you draw from a holster at all. That's why I like shooting outside at the farm.

The safety/decocker is a shop fitted piece IIRC.

I'd call S&W and see if they will send you a mialing label. I would also consider asking them to convert it to decock only. Then you never have to worry about the safety inadvertantly being activated. Regards 18DAI.

Good job on identifying (and admitting!) weak areas and mistakes in your self defence program. I am due for a review myself. It might be time to arrange some instruction. Keep it solid and basic. Then practice. Invite a like minded friend and have fun!

is that an IL model? Is that what you guys have been talking about inadvertently happening?

Ummm.....no.

These are 3rd generation S&W's. Made prior to Safety Hammer taking over S&W and adding that "innovation".

Those M&P's are available with the IL though. :)

oh... ok, so did the 3rd gen guns have a different kind of lock that was troublesome? Should I stay away from them too? It doesn't seem like we should depend on those guns in a real life defensive situation.. I'm really just trying to understand the how and why of what is and isn't prefered for options on our guns.

oh ya, Thank God my M&P's don't have IL's... :)

It's not a lock. He's talking about the decocker.
