hello everybody,

im new here and new to firearms really, well i have had experienced with them but i hadnt owned one yet. After a long time of looking to see what my first purchase would be. The S&W 38 specail model 10 that i saw at a gun store caught. My eye. Initially it was priced at $490. Then i revisited the store 3 weeks later and they had brought down the price to $350. So i bargained with the owner and got him to bring it down to $320 including tax and i put it on layaway. He said it was very old, but in still great condition. The timing was good and there were no signs of damage. He said it was at least made in the 40s or 50s which i dont know if he was telling the truth or not. like i said im still learning. But i did notice that the front site was round as opposed to modern sights. Either way im excited to take it out and give it a try. I like the older designs better then the newer ones. Just wanted to introduce my self and all. thanks for having me here.

Welcome to the site! There are a lot of firearm sites out there on the web, but the S&W forum is one of the very best.

You made an outstanding choice with the Model 10. This model dates back to 1899 as the S&W Hand Ejector. The "Military & Police" or "M&P" model, as it was called, was eventually renamed the Model 10 when S&W went to numeric designations in 1957. It is probably the most successful and widely-produced handgun in history.

In my humble opinion, it is the greatest revolver ever made, and the price you paid sounds good.

Welcome. Post a picture when you get it. If you know the serial# we can get close to the date of mfg. What length barrel is is?

Welcome to the forum, sounds like you found a dandy! Definitly post a pick if you can!

thanks ya'll. I will definitely post some pics when i get it and i don't have the serial number right now but ill find out tomorrow. I believe that the length of the barrel is 4 inches. im pretty sure but not 100%. i will get the serial number and see if you all can get a date. Thank you again! :)

Welcome to the board and congratulations on a great gun purchase.

I carry my 1960 vintage snubbie everyday. Love it.

Welcome to the forum. You will find that this is about the best place for gunners around. The collective knowledge of the members is awsome, and not just for S&Ws. Welcome aboard!!

There should ought to be a rule that everyone should own a Mdl 10 during their life. Most of those who get one will keep it.

There are many pre-10's like it , but this one is mine...It came with rubber training grips...but the bird's eye maple stocks gives it a classy look. The fit and finish of these guns is just superior. Mine has age marks, etc. but it is one of my favorites, and shoots better than me. These guns were made when production meant something...the best they could be. I believe mine was assembled around 1948-1952 and has a ser. # of C225xxx (all parts match ex. the grips) cost...$295 c.w.

You mean there's not a law that requires you to have either an M&P or Model 10 ??

Tell me it's not so !!

Next thing you'll be trying to tell me that it's a law that you have to have a lever action 30-30 if you grow up in South Texas and that the lever action police won't write you up for not having one !

Congrats on the purchase of a really great gun
