My wife wanted to see all the carnage on the big screen (we never go to the show anymore). It was about what I expected, except some the main characters were more dimentional than I thought they'd be. Nowadays to keep people's attention there has to be a numbing degree of choreographed action and shootin' and this has it in the extreme. The gunfighters are super human. The bad guys are super bad. The Asian knife expert and the Indian are very ninja. I thought that would be lame but it was alright.
Denzel Washington was good. But the best part in it was Ethan Hawke. That guy is great for a western, and his character was the most complicated. And he just had a very authentic look. This ain't the type of movie that gets Oscar considerations, but he should be looked at here. Sorry. but he never even draws his Schofield.
It was fun going to the show for a change, but renting it later would have been fine.

I had heard comments from folks who said they much preferred the original. Duh...really? I mean that's like comparing Marilyn Monroe to whomever the recent big-screen femme fatale is. You just can't beat the original. Period. You can't compare. It ain't fair to the new gal on the block.

When Ms. Judy and I went to see it the other day, we kept telling ourselves that we had to take it on its own value and not try to compare it to the original. I just kept asking myself, "Is it a good western or not?" With that mindset, we came out of the theater thoroughly enjoying the film.

Sure, it's not the original Magnificent Seven, or Seven Samurai, or whatever. But, still, it was very entertaining.

Of course, you know me. If the movie has guns and horses in it, it can't be half bad.:)

Guns in it, Mule Packer?! That's for sure. I wish I bought stock in Uberti before this movie was made. I never seen so many guns being used in a western. And of course they all looked authentic.
When the original Seven pops up on TV I can't help but watch it. even though I got the DVD. But if Steve McQueen wasn't in it I'd think it was just pretty good. I went in with a clear head here with no intention either of comparing movies.

We have it scheduled for next weekend. I plan to take it for its own merits and not compare it to the original. At least that's what I'll try to do.

No spoilers Please.

The wife and I enjoyed it for what it is was.Stepson liked it he was not raised on westerns he is a Star Wars kind of guy.But he enjoyed it wish I could get him interested in classic westerns

When Denzel Washington first appeared I leaned over to my wife and whispered, "Blooper. It's set in 1879 and those grips on his Colt started in 1882". Of course I didn't care. I just do that goofing off to see if I can make her roll her eyes and she knows it. It's cool to see a shoot em up western number one at the box office. The technical gun coach was the great Thell Reed as usual. He did Tombstone and most westerns since then.

Interestingly, the original 1960 version of this movie *did* get one Oscar nomination, for "Best Music, Scoring of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture Elmer Bernstein"

The best I expect when going to the movies these days is to be entertained. It's extremely rare that a film is stunningly fantastic. So, as long as I'm reasonably well entertained, the popcorn is great, and the theater has electric leather recliners (yes, our local theater does)... I'm happy going to the movies.

Thell Reed??? Now, that is going back a ways to when he was a teenager shooting with the big boys in Southern California!!

I remember once he emptied a Colt 1911 so fast that all eight empties were still in the air when the last shot was fired.........I can't even think that fast!!;)

The PC remake of a great movie. I'll wait till it's on HBO. In the meantime I'll console myself watching the original on DVD.

The key to any "good" movie is to have a good story that draws the viewer in.

Too many people today seem to confuse a lot of action such as impossible acrobatic feats, tremendous explosions and destruction, extended gun fights, and other visual effects with having a good story. These can help a little but they can't truly substitute for good actors and the human interaction that draws us in.

Years ago I showed my son the car chase in Bullitt. It didn't seem to make an impression at all. But we had just watched a movie he put on where Anjolina Jolie was spinning a car in the air while confidentally shooting bad guys through the sunroof until landing on four wheels perfectly. All compliments of computers. The real thing just couldn't compete with that, I guess.
