Hi Guys,

Ever since I sold my model 36 (Which was beautiful) I regretted it. I do a lot of bartering and just ended up trading my Taurus 1911 for a 6" 686-1. She is a beauty as well, I'm overly picky and would say it's in 95% new condition. Original wood grips are mint but the gun does has very light handling marks. I would like to buff them out if possible and have been reading that many owners use the Mothers Mag and aluminum polish. Would buffing the guns original finish detract from any value? I will post pics tonight, possibly. Thanks in advance for the insight!

So will a polish detract from value?

Well - congrats on your new acquisition! I for one happen to like Taurus too & also own one of their 1911 pistols - mine is in 9MM - but I am also a revolver guy at heart. Currently have (2) M686 revolvers & hope to add 2 more.

On the finish: if it's a shooter (which from your description it sounds like it is), then just go ahead & polish it up if you want to. If this gun were an ANIB, then I would say don't do it.

If you want to go all out, send it in to S&W & have them do a bead blast or high polish to it. I can't speak from my own experience, but I understand they do outstanding work. I also understand you'll be without your gun for a while too. :(

Enjoy!

Take the grips off, and try Mothers or Flitz in a discreet area that you would not be able to see with the Grips on. See how that Works.

YankeeMarshall on YouTube has a video where he uses Mothers on either a 686 or a Colt. I can't remember.
