Just won a 686-5 6", confused

Ok, so I throw what I think is a token bid on GB for a 6" 686 that I just have never seen quite like this one. Looks pretty unfired, it's that dull black finish like my 3" Bounty Hunter 629. Has 4 holes ported on each side of the front barrel. I searched through my S&W Catalog, 3rd edition, couldn't pin much down other than the basic build of the -5. Not sure if the porting is a factory job however the box label indicates a special order number of 9277. Includes original box and manual. Serial is CDR5498.

Can I post a link to the GB add I won... lots of info and pics... hoping someone can give me a little more info on value and or what this model actually is.. none of the 686's in the catalog show this model in the flat black finish..

Yes, you can post a link to a closed auction...especially if you are the winning bidder at a great price .

All the Special Order code tells you is the gun was ready to ship on October 4, 1989 (the 277th day of a year ending in the number 9). KC (along with the rest of us) will want the Product Code, it may be a factory special or have an aftermarket finish and porting job.

But, I thought those were produced in the -3 era...

"Spec Ord" decodes to the production date, it's not a special order. Someone will decode it for us.

You'll still have $650 into this gun by the time you pay shipping and fees. To me that's a reasonable price in the current climate.

I'm not an expert by any means. But, that doesn't look like an original S&W finish, and that doesn't look like the kind of porting that is done at the factory. I suspect that your gun was customized after it left S&W.

Depending on who did the work, it could be a heck of a deal..... or not.

THanks, I have a daily saved search for that company. Have purchased a few good deals with them. Wasn't looking for anything in particular, just that it caught my eye. I own a 386 6" Hunter, actually, now that I think of it, I believe I purchased that one from them also.. I threw in the starting bid, figured it would not hold... it did. I like it so far in the pictures, we'll see when it gets home..

Product Code 104198 is listed in the SCSW as a standard 686, no porting or special finish, but never say never with S & W. A factory letter will probably clarify matters if you want to spend the $50. Cool gun anyhow .

I am glad to know I'm not the only guy who's acted before knowing all the details.

That's a really attractive revolver and got my interest enough I invested* a bunch of time trying to research it without success suggesting to me that it might be a custom job. I do not recall seeing any porting from S&W similar to the ports in this revolver. S&W has made 586's and 686's with "Melonite" finishes that remind me of the finish on this revolver. Regardless I think you got a nice revolver and a fair, if not good, deal. I would trust the Kernel Crittendon (sp?) and hope he weighs in on this one.

thanks.. I've been flipping through the S&W catalog... that's all I've been able to find, did a little search online for that Midnight Black 686... I'm trying to figure out what the code abbreviations are now.. can't find it in the catalog.. gonna do an online search next for that..

In this system,

9 = the last year of the decade (pretty much narrowed down to 1989 or '99, as the factory did not use this label format in 1979 or 2009)
277 = the 277th day of that year, or October 4 in a non-Leap Year.

How easy it would have been if it were September 2, 1977 .

It's an nice pre lock 686 at a decent price, but I dont think it came from the factory like that. Being a dash-5 1999 seems right for a date.
