Just won a 686-5 6", confused

Love the gun, but I think it is a bead blast blue finish, that was done by a real master. The porting I believe was also done outside the factory. I hope you plan to use this revolver, as it was made to shoot, and I'd be putting a lot of rounds downrange with it.

thanks.. I've been flipping through the S&W catalog... that's all I've been able to find, did a little search online for that Midnight Black 686... I'm trying to figure out what the code abbreviations are now.. can't find it in the catalog.. gonna do an online search next for that..

Opps... just figured some of it out.. 6" barrel, SB grips, S finish, but doesn't explain these..... SG RR WO DT 1995-1998

these references are explained on page 171 in the SCSW.......

I'm not sure what it is, but I'm very sure I really like it. I think you landed a great piece at a great price. Let us know how it shoots.......so we can be even more envious. :)

The gun has been refinished and the porting is not factory as well. Still for the price you got a good deal on a shooter, so go shoot and enjoy it.

Got to this one a little late. Was watching a Chris Farley documentary (a fellow Madisonian), followed by the movie Tommy Boy :D).

To me the OP's gun looks like a standard production 6-inch 7-shot M686-5 that had some aftermarket work done to it. The product code is nothing special. The "Midnight Black" M686's were -3 from the "88 and '89 (at least, those I've seen). This gun has a ship date of...........

October 4, 1999

In the SCoSW, were it gives the feature codes of the 104198 I think they mean:

S - Stainless construction
SG - Santoprene Grips (the Hogue rubbers, it's like another name for neoprene)
RR - Red Ramp front sight
WO - White Outline rear sight blade
DT - Drilled and Tapped (like all -5s)

If you like the modifications, I think you got a decent deal. Looks like it was blasted and blackened. Comp holes drilled like that take some skill and good equipment. Probably has a real nice trigger job, too.

Is there a marking on the right side plate (right above and behind the trigger)? Looks like there might be something there in the pictures, but I can't make it out. Maybe the gunsmith left a mark somewhere.

I got it!!!!1 OMG... it's as nicer or nicer than the pics... I'll update a little more when I get home, still working here.. but it is a beauty.. don't think I can shoot it..

Wow, I forgot about this thread ... for a long time.. Just received a "like" on it. Looks like I need to respond my results... I'll have to revisit this beauty, it's been tucked away in my vault. I do remember shooting it... it shot as good as I was capable of shooting it .... one time ... but now, I'm inspired to break it out, shoot the heck out of it and give a good report..
