I have a K-38 Single Action Only that I have used in ISU (UIT) center fire matches. NRA Distinguished Revolver matches seem to require that a pistol be "as issued" from the factory. So, the question is "Did any of these come from the factory as SAO, or was this a modification from, for example, Gil Hebard"?

As a target pistol, it is superb. I have used it happily for 40 years.

You could get them from the factory, or buy the parts from S&W and install them yourself (or have your gunsmith do so). I have one from the factory, it's my most accurate K38.

As far as I know, the only way to tell if it came from the factory is if you have a matching box with the info, or sending for a letter.

I was reading the 1962 Gun Digest last night (the one with the then new model 53 on the cover), and they mentioned that the SA option was now available from the factory. I guess this means they started doing this around 1961, but I'm not sure. Sadly, I'm at work, so I can't check the SCS&W. :)
