Recently acquired a model 15-2 2 inch, made in 1965, serial K6134xx. At the time of purchase the grips were rubber hogue, however the seller stated he had the wood grips that came with it at his relatives home a few hours away. He mentioned this revolver had been his aunts and he had inherited it. He thought the wood grips were too thin and switched to hogues. I met back up with him today and he provided me the original looking diamond magnas with a serial # stamped that is 1306 off the serial number of the gun. They have the correct washers and are certainly from the same era. They fit very well. Is it common for revolvers to have a set of grips stamped with a serial # close but not exactly matching the revolver? It would seem not an easy task to search for and find a set of grips that close to the revolver serial.

There are several possible explanations. If the seller's relatives bought the model 15 new the stocks may have been matched to the wrong numbered gun during assembly, not unusual when this was done by eyeball and feel. If they bought it used, or they might have had several similar guns, someone did the mismatching without the factory's help. Ex-law enforcement and military S & Ws often have mismatched stocks, as the armorers weren't particular about keeping parts together as long as the gun worked afterward.

I wouldn't sweat it! 15 snubs are so cool anyway. I looked for 1 for a while. Like many other things, it did not happen. Did wind up with a 10-5 2" snub, R.B. though. Close, but no cigar! Shoot & enjoy your 15! Bob

I have a 10-5 2" Nickel that I bought brand new in 1972. The grips that came on it were off by one number. Obviously it got slightly out of sequence at the factory. Not a big deal.
