This pre-18 has had so many problems, I worked on it for more than three days. For some unknown reason somebody removed the DA sear, the hammer was sticking on the cylinder release and trigger, and on and on. Any way, the thing functions very well now, but I noticed the rear sight did not look correct at all. I'm just guessing the rear sight is from an N-frame, if that is even possible. I compared it to other K target frames and it does not look right. The geometry makes it appear to be a Frankengun. This thing has driven me crazy, but I am determined to get it right.

My other thought is the sight is for a K-frame after they moved the mounting screw (#5155), but I doubt that.

FWIW it looks like a Nice Smith..Is the square base silver elevation upright stud that slips into the rear frame slot in place to adjust the top
elevation screw..I cant tell much by a single picture..
My best on your efforts to correct your issues.
It will be a nice piece soon I believe..w your
perserverance..

I would call or write S&W and find out if the have the correct sight available. They are usually very helpful.

You could also look on the Gunpartscorp.com site. They have almost anything you need including the sight you are looking for and all the parts you need to install it.

Just tried the elevation adjustment, and surprise, surprise, it didn't move. Turns out the little T-base is missing. I told you it is a basket case!! I have a sight assembly in a parts drawer in the basement. I'll check to see if it fits. Otherwise it's like ArchAngelCD said, off to Numrich and or S&W.

Thanks guys.

If you get into a tight for the base square elevation stud piece let me know..I'll put one in the mail if you need it..
Best Randy

My spare sight has the elevation stud, but when installed it does not go all the was into the slot. It appears to me that the vertical cut in the top rear of the frame was made too far forward. The part of the sight with the windage adjustment should fit closer to the frame cut

Another Pre-18 for comparison. If this was done by S&W it somehow got past QC.

Measure distance from front of sight blade to center of screw that holds sight on. Are they the same?

I guess I'll swap sight assemb. between them.

Someone had installed a -3 or later rear sight. It's going to the range today to see if it at least groups well.
