Kel Tec shotgun question

I own 2 of them. Got the first about 3 years ago..and put about 1k rounds through it and bought another. They don't like "soft" plastic shells, and you will need to learn to cycle the slide slower than most pump actions. It is NOT a model 12 Winchester.
I have over 3k rounds through the first one, as I take it Sporting Clays shooting often.(and do very well with it)
The only way to learn a gun is to shoot it..often. Both of mine have been trouble free and I would buy another if the opportunity came up. Parts can be directly purchased right from Kel-Tec (not that I have needed any, other than accessories) I have Eotech 512s on both of mine. The KSG is my go to weapon for self defense.15 rounds of 12 gauge with no reloading. That is firepower to live by.

I read all the stories about how "bad" they were, and decided to find out for myself. Once again proving that it is usually the operator that has an issue, not the gun. The one good thing about the undeserved "bad" reputation is the prices are 1/2 what they use to be...:)

I had one but traded it off for an AR. The steel butt plate was a bit much for an older guy with a neck injury. It worked fine though. It will kick empties out pretty hard and hit your arm hard enough to leave a mark. But IMO it's a gun that is made for HD and not for shooting a lot. Of course you will need to shoot it enough to be familiar with it in a bad situation but I wouldn't want to shoot clays with one. YMMV

This is my "Sporting Clays" KSG. I use a single sling with a Hi-Tech QD pivot mount. It has the Kel-Tec interchangeable choke adaptor (mainly for suppressor use,but winchokes fit it too) a W Engineering titanium trigger (much better feel and reset than the stock plastic one),and the Kel-Tec "thicker" (think softer..) butt plate.

Lots of fun shooting it against all the puffy shirts and their Krieghoffs...and beating them...every week...:)

Last snap is my range bag. Stealth has its rewards..;)

The stock butt plate is actually rubber, but not very thick, and will punish you if you shoot it a lot.

I have read about the empties hitting peoples wrists or forearms, but in all the thousands of rounds I've put through mine, I have never once been hit. Not once. And I do shoot in a T shirt at times. So,it must be how they are holding it? I dunno..it's a non issue for me..:)

That is a sweet rig. I like the custom range bag too!

My LGS has one for a fair price, and it seems to me that having 15 rounds of 00 Buck ready to go could be a real good thing. That is 145 .36 caliber round ball flying at 11 or 1200 fps. Just the thing for zombie hunting!:cool::cool:

Under 50 feet..if I have my KGS in hand..I fear nothing. I know how to use it proficiently, and I am very much on target...even if that target is only 4", and flying! :) The house KSG has seven OO buck in the left magazine and seven 1oz slugs in the right. 7&7! Plus one in the chamber..;)

They sell the deflector for those that get hit by the empties. Use good shells with tough hulls. Stick to Winchester AAs,Federal Golds,B&Ps,Remington Nitros,S&Bs, or Fiocchis. Some of the inexpensive shells with "soft" hulls will occasionally hang up if you are too fast with the cycle(Rios,RSTs,Herters,Estates etc) If you can squeeze them (finger and thumb) more than 1/4" they are too soft. Smooth but deliberate full stroke of the action, eject, very slight pause, then the return. There is a learning curve, but once you master it..it's all good. Even soft hulls will feed. It's demanding, but so is a fast race car..;)

great info in this thread. I've wanted one for a while, but have read the usual FUD about them.

I am realistic about KelTec quality, as I already have a P-11 which uses my S&W 5906 and 6906 mags.

I guess mine did have a rubber butt plate but it was so thin it might as well have not been there. I think that's why I remembered it as not having one. It was hardly effective at taming the recoil. Plus the angle of the butt plate made it dig into my shoulder at the bottom of the plate. It was not at all comfortable to shoot. I once shot 3 3.5" turkey loads in about a minute. That hurt less than shooting the Kel-Tec with low-brass shells. And I actually bled from being hit by flying empty cases. The shotgun is one awesome HD weapon but it's pretty crude in many ways. Also if you didn't rack the slide just right it didn't feed right. There's a reason they came out with a new version.

I've been shooting shotguns for 55 years. I started when I was 7. I grew up on a trap range. It was in my back yard. I'm pretty familiar with shotguns. The original Kel-Tec has some issues but not enough for many people to stay away. Just people with health issues like I have.

I was just looking through the site to see if anyone had talked about these. I picked my KSG up Sunday used, I think I did pretty good. It came with some Ruger flip up sights, vertical handgrip, and the larger butt pad. I haven’t got to take it to the range yet. But first impressions are, I think it could make a great home defense gun.

I would think that a holo red dot would be perfect for a home defense KSG.

At those distances, where the red dot hovers, there will be a hole. Even 00 buckshot at under 10 yards or so will just be one big hole.
