Due to the forum's collective, uh, um, maturity level, I would think that a few here might have some personal insight into the particular brand of joy one calls kidney stones.

Under the doc's supervision, I tried both dietary changes and drug therapies to no avail. Keep getting 'em.

Anyone know Granny's secret fix ? Great-Granny's ?

When in the Army in Arizona they attributed them to urea crystals building up due to dehydration. The cure was a lot of water. That was 40 years ago, do they still treat with the electrode which looks like a giant spark plug which causes a shock wave to break them up till passable?

Lithotripsy is used in many cases. I don't remember anything about the procedure apart from warm water.

Drink plenty of water and cranberry juice. If you do not like cranberry juice you can get them in tablet form. As to what causes them, it could be a number of things. My doc told me to cut down on carbonated drinks, which seams to help.

Went through my first bout of them beginning the middle of November last year. Five ureterscopies and two trips through lithotripsy later, I will tell you this. This is what my urologist has told me. Drink lots of water. 80 oz a day is a good start. You should see virtually no color at all in your urine. Stay away from colored sodas. Citrus is good, like a squeeze of lemon in water. The acid helps dissolve the microscopic rocks.

Have you done the 24 hour urine collection? If not, do it. It will give you the chemical makeup of your urine and then you can better see what diet changes or medication may help.

Just to give you a day brightener, I have five of the vials that they use to draw blood. Each one of them is at last 1/4 inch deep in stone fragments.

If you want to talk send me a PM.

I just had a duesey of a stone, my second. The most pain I've ever endured. And of course I'm not interested in going through that again. But, I have another waiting to deliver at some point. I had 9 doses of Dilauded. It's the most powerful pain killer available. Be careful...it will make anything remaining in your intestines turn to cement.

Avoiding kidney stones is dependent upon the composition of the stone. Do some research! My doctor had the stone analyzed and I have the most common type.

After doing my homework and reading all that the doctor has given me on the subject, drinking more water, reducing salt intake, eating no more than 6 ounces of meat protein a day, and limiting my consumption of dark green vegetables (oxcilates). Yeah, I know mom wouldn't like to hear that one.

Adding a little lemon to your water helps to reduce the formation of the oxcilates that make my stones. You should know what kind of stone you have to know how to avoid the next one(s) Also, I found out...if you have had one, the chances of a second is very high.

I've spoken to women who have had children and stones...almost all of them have said, "stones are worse than having children."

And too, the Doc can go in and get them now. They start at the bottom...get it?? and scope in all the way to the kidney, break it up with a laser and take them out. This procedure is done when the stone is at a lower position in the kidney. My other one is about 9mm. The one I just passed was 3mm. Whoa baby, did it hurt. This method is more received, apparently than is Lithotripsy, but comes with controversy do to necessity.

Talk to your doctor...do some homework from those who really know. Gun forum??? come on Patriot

Well, I guess maybe you're in the right place after all. I just gave you some good advise, huh?

Hope it all comes out okay... did I really say that?

One doctor said that lemonade was a great way to reduce stones. Another said beer as it makes one want to go to the bathroom. Said doc told my spouse to go get me some when I had my first stone. As for water I go through a gallon a day with no effect on my stones.

My last one was a doozy (I've had 5 over the years), the ER doc said either you've been shot with a .38 or that's one BIG stone! Turns out it was 22mm by 13 mm, no way I was passing that thing . It took 2 separate Lithotripsy sessions to break it up. Doc said drink lots of water and put lemon juice in the water to prevent stone formation

I have had as much personal experience with kidney stones. as I have
had with police work.Unfortunately I am a kidney stone producing machine,
much of it due to my fault, I hate drinking water and don't do it, I love
drinking Sprite and often buy over $100.00 worth at a time when I find
a good sale ( 12 pack for $3.00 )
I had lithotripsy in the 80's, it was a temporary fix.
The most advantageous improvement came from analyzing the composition of my removed stones and placing me on two medicines to
aid in reducing their growth, I don't think it has decreased my production rate due to no water and the Sprite but what has happened is a chemical
reaction in formation of the stone, they use to have many sharp points
like a sand spur passing and slicing the urine route causing excruciating
pain, Taking the two drugs, the stones are smoother, do not cut and create blood or pain. The smaller stones pass easily but I had accumulated
large ones that required surgery to remove just 4 months ago, the surgeon stated they were the largest he had ever removed and showed
a cup full to my wife, the largest looking like an apricot pit.
The two drugs I take daily that smoothes the exterior of the stones making
what I am able to pass nearly painless is 150 MG TABLET OF ALLOPURINOL DAILY and 10 MEQ SA TABLETS of POTASSIUM CITRATE
three times a day ( All my medicine comes from the VA Hospital )
You might share this info with your Uroligist, I have endured lots of pain
before obtaining this medicine.

I strongly disagree with the suggestion to drink beer to help flush the kidneys, though it may help,
you could create your own Frankenstein.
My son developed kidney stones also, at the time he did not drink any alcohol, his Doctor recommended
drinking one beer per day to flush his kidneys, turns out over a few years my son had an addictive
personality, became an alcoholic and died of scirossis of the liver at age 51.

+1 on avoiding soda drinks, and good advice has been given in several of these posts.

I'll just add -- as one who fortunately doesn't suffer with them -- that kidney stones are nature's way of reminding us men that we're lucky not to be able to have babies.....;)

Had a lithotripsy last year. Didn't even know I had a stone. Dr. found it in a scan for other issues. He said it was too big to pass. Had a couple nurses tell me to drink lemon juice daily for prevention. Checked with Dr. and he said OK so I drink 1/4 cup a day.

I had 2 stones 11 years ago. I was 51 years old, I never had them before. Man, those things hurt. They were too big to pass. One was in a kidney and looked like a mushroom an inch across and a "stem" an inch long. Surgery, they go in and place the lithotripsy instrument up to the stone with a suction next to it. This stone was fairly soft and broke up well. The other was in the tube between kidney and bladder. During surgery they tried to grasp it and pull it back into the kidney, but it wouldn't budge. Conventional lithotripsy didn't work, but the laser did. That stone looked like a banana, an inch long, and was very hard. 2 stones at the same time, completely different characteristics. Haven't had any since. Have taken a mild diuretic and potassium ever since. I cut back on soda, almost stopped, and tea also. Water is good, and not that bottled stuff.

I was traveling in Turkey with a friend who had an attack. Went to (Turkish) doctor who said surgery was called for, but try this. Go to a public bath, sit in hot water, drink 12 quarts of beer. My friend passed the stone and didn't feel a thing...Only downside was the hangover.

Just when I think my problems may be bad I read a thread like this and thank God I never had kidney stones. I guess no matter how bad you may feel there's always someone out there that has it much worse.

I feel for those of you that are now enduring any kind of pain. My prayers go out to all of you.

i had one stone it passed .The second got stuck between kidney and bladder like the other gent, they put a stent in me i urinated blood for 6 weeks till i got laser thats cause i was leaking urine in my body. i told the doctor, sure is alot of blood coming out of me , he said dont worry about it as long as your body is making more than it is expelling . Finally i got the laser still urinated blood for a few days then just started feeling better. He asked me what i drank i said 5 hour energy drink he said stop that right now. lots of coffee and tea are not good either . I did have the big stone checked out after break up he said cut down on shell fish ,oh come on i live in the keys and cut down on red meat drink lots of water and i always do. i dont drink soda i go back every 6 months 4 a sound agrham . the worst part is when you go back after the laser a week so they can pull that stent out they do that in the office with a camera scope and a plumbing tool , a small one of course. that freaked me out your awake for that one just relax as they pull that 15 inch stent out of you with the camera and plumbing tool and you all know what that stuff is coming out of , ok you can put your pants back on i hope that never happens again. lots and lots of water then more water good luck

I feel for ya. My dad has had them since he was 18 and he's 72 now. He went to every kind of dr in the country, tried everything imaginable, to no avail. He's passed enough of them to gravel a long driveway. He averages about 8 a year. Nothing has worked for him, unfortunately. I think it's all in how your body breaks down the nutrients. The best way he deals with them is by "floating" them out. He can tell when one is moving and then starts drinking water. To the point where he is constantly drinking and peeing. This float them out as he says!

I wish you the best of luck.
