Kit Gun

A kit gun is one that is taken with you in your "kit" (gear), often on fishing or hunting trips. An old song was "Pack up your troubles in your old kit bag...."

Usually, a small, compact handgun, most often a revolver in .22 LR. The S&W M34, built on the I or J frame, is the most popular kit gun.

.32 Long revolvers are also popular. Ruger makes a small .22 LR single action revolver, the Bearcat, that qualifies as a kit gun.

I just read about this today in The Gun Digest Book of Smith & Wesson Muley Gil just about covered it, nothing to add other than the book recommended the .22 AirLite as a modern version.

The "kit" guns are also neat for teaching youngin's to shoot as they are a better fit to their little hands. And they are convenient ccw pack-a-longs on hiking trips.

I love the names given for certain classes of guns.

Kit gun= small , usu .22 hand gun. examples being 34, 63, Bearcat, ruger semi, browning buckmark, S&W 22.

Truck gun=4" barrelled revolver 10, 13, 65, 64, ruger securitysix/gp100, M&P-Glock, etc

Boat (small) gun=see truck gun but in stainless-see also kit gun but in stainles and at least 4" barrel.

Boat (large) gun = 870-mini 14/AR clone

Not that this is definitive-just what pops into my mind.

For me-my Kit gun is a 63 or my 317. My boat/truck gun is a DAO 64. My big boat gun is my 870.

I had a four-inch Model 34 and it had VERY hard extraction and I was uneasy with just a .22 in camp or trail situations.

My current "kit gun" is a Model 60-4 .38 with three-inch barrel.

And Ruger's SP-101 with three or the new four-inch barrel (has adj. sights, too) is also about ideal as a handy hiker's handgun.

I have a model 37 no dash with the 1 7/8" barrel that I use as a kit gun. I guess it would be cheaper to use a .22 if you planned on shooting some while you are fishing/camping or whatever, but I kind like a little more punch than a .22 in the woods or around the lake or pond.
Peace,
gordon
