I have been able to purchase reasonably priced 9MM and .38 Special Winchester brand ammo at Wal-Mart and Academy Sports. Sure, they run out. But, neither this manufacturer nor these dealers have taken drastic price increases due to the current shortages. On the other hand, look at Federal, American Eagle, who have doubled the retail price of a 50-round box of their ball cartridges. I wish that large volume dealers, such as Natchez and Cheaper Than Dirt, would quit selling their product. I won't buy them and I sure won't try to buy up more stock than I need. Making exorbitant profits or excaberting shortages caused by fear is not good for our sport.

Beat me up for saying that I don't appreciate price gouging. However, I sure hold a lot of respect for the companies that are looking to the future of shooting, and not pricing many Americans out of it.

How do you know that Federal has "doubled the retail price" of their ammo. They sell to distributors not to retail outlets and do not set retail pricing. The supply chain markup after Federals whosale price is what determines what you, the consumer, pay.

Well, The two mentioned plus Midway are all $29.95 for a box of 50. That doesn't smell like dealer markup to me. Tell me if you know different and I'll shop elsewhere.

I don't have a clue what the wholesale price of ammo is and doubt anyone else here does either.

p.s. Cheaper Than Dirt can kiss my rosey red ripe tomatoes!

I see Cheaper than dirt has a price gouging history. There is another entry on this forum about Gander Mountain. I won't do buiness with them.

I work for the company that ownes Federal, and we have an employee purchase program. But currently there is nothing to purchase, but we do see new price lists at the employee level and the ammo prices have gone down, I guess from the change in lead and copper prices.I am quite sure what you are seeing are not from Federal, it is some one else up the line.

wholesale prices have taken a modest 3.5 % increase since jan.

it is supply and demand. its the american way. make money while you can. look at the gas companies no one is jumping down there back. everyone has forgotten about high gas prices.we will forget about high ammo prices.

Sir, I have not forgotten, nor have I forgiven. The gas/oil companies know that their time is short. Ingenuity and invention will eventually put them back in their place - IMHO.

I bought a 50 round box of Federal Hydra-Shok .380 tonight. $38. One per customer. Fair enough.

Sounds like your describing the oil companies. LOL
