I am considering an IWB kydex holster for my S&W Shield and am wondering about the comfort against bare skin, sweat, etc.. I'm in Florida with very warm temps and high humidity most of the year and sweat is gauranteed.

For IWB carry, is it best to avoid bare skin contact? What is better and more comfortable kydex, finished leather, suede leather??

Thanks, Dave

kydex isnt to bad honestly. i like leather better myself and i have a crossbreed for my shield and i am in florida as well.

I would think a hybrid holster would be more comfortable. Really, only about the top 1/3 of the holster is against the skin anyway. Unless you go commando. Firearmholster.com puts a very thin felt pad on the back of the holster leather, that may help.

I wear a kydex everyday against my skin with no problems or issues. In fact it's rather comforting.

Leather is more comfortable. The drawback is that it soaks sweat and can become stinky over time. This is the nature of concealed carry in a humid environment.

I have a Comp-Tac Infidel Ultra that I use for my M&P 40C. It's very comfortable. I have the same holster on the way for my new Shield.

If you have the dollars, go horse hair over leather - far better in the humidity.

If you still want a Kydex one in a couple of weeks, give me a shout. When I get a mold gun I am going to start making them.

Very true, and it's thinner. In our summer months here, with pure kydex against skin, the sweat just gets trapped between the kydex and you skin and makes it slippery. I prefer a multi-material/stitched (Garrett Industries Silent Thunder Fusion) or straight leather. Although the leather is porous, even when I sweat the most, it's not like a sponge.

I don`t use them regularly but I have a friend that does use leather in a hot climate and to stop the leather from absorbing sweat he uses that waterproofing spray they use on shoes to waterproof them, he says it works perfect...he has the comfort of leather and it doesn`t absorb the sweat...

I have seen people who sweat heavily sweat clear through leather IWB holsters. In a humid environment, I think kydex has some advantages. If you go with leather, get two. Same theory with your leather shoes. alternate daily and let the non-use one dry out on the off day. I am, however, not sure of the long-term effect of the body salt becoming part of the leather after the moisture goes away. Salt attracts moisture, which causes rust. Even though your slide is nitride treated (melonite), other parts are not, and things like slide locks, etc., may end up a nice shade of brown. :)

Horsehide is better than cowhide. Check with K. L. Null of Resaca Georgia if you want horsehide. Unless you really sweat profusely, horsehide should do nicely.

If you get kydex, wear a t-shirt under the holster. Glued on felt pads make the holster thicker and the perspiration will cause the pad to shift, leaving nasty glue exposed, and then you will have a sticky mess.

Try N8 Tactical pro holster, made here in North Carolina and very comfortable, I have used it everyday all year, no problems when sweat touches it, still comfortable.
