Laminated or Solid Wood?

Hello all. I recently purchased these K-frame stocks for a 1967 19-3. I was told they are solid Santos Rosewood. I believe they are laminated. Any thoughts?

Solid or Laminated?

Cannot say for certain, but Altamont usually calls their laminated grips "Super" something. Like Super Walnut. Solid should mean real wood.

Papa, I agree, not solid wood. They did say I could return them.

I'm guessing solid wood. A view from the bottom of the butt would help.

Those appear to be what is claimed. Solid rosewood.
If they are laminate, they are very well done.
Checking the bottom and front/rear of the grips should tell you.

They aren’t laminated. If they were, you would have straight grain on the bottom.

"Santos rosewood" is also known as Pau Ferro or Morado. Funky grain is typical. I agree with the others who said it's not a laminate.

I too say solid. Laminated looks totally different.

What you see as lamination layers are actually the tree's growth rings in cross section. They are clearly semi-circular whereas lamination layers would be straight and perfectly parallel.

I agree. Laminated wood isn’t curved.

Those faux Roper grips (for K frames) are almost right for me. They are a little too thin to fill my medium sized hand enough for me to really like their feel. I asked if they would put the Roper checkering pattern on one of their Coke style grip blanks for me, but they said no dice, they just made standard grips to their specs.

I hate to beat a dead horse, and there seem to be many opinions, but... The 1st picture shows the wood with vertical irregular grain patterns that I would expect with solid wood. That's what I was hoping to get. The 2nd picture is the stock I received that has (what I would expect) if you had layered/laminated wood, and the grain pattern of the layers exposed as you cut down to the contours of the grip.

Those are solid wood, very nicely "Book Matched" If they were laminated the lines would be straight and parallel to the sides of the frame, not only on the bottom, but when looking straight at the front or back of the stocks. You can't always tell if wood is laminated from looking at the flat sides. Think of plywood since that is what laminated is. but you can tell easily when looking at the edges
