About a year ago I had a guy at the range tell me the ideal 38/357 revolver for old pharts to CC was the 3", RB K-frame. Got to thinking about that and even looked for one to try in that capacity. Dang! Everybody else was looking for the same thing and the prices were through the roof.

Since I wasn't convinced of the idea and just wanted to try it I got to mulling it all over and decided S&W had really missed the ball in not bringing out a 3", RB L-frame. Now that would be the ideal carry revolver in 357 Mag/38 Special, with enough weight to give a little more control in rapid fire with real magnums but not enough more size or weight to really be a problem.

Talked it over with my out of state gun smith friend a couple times and started looking for a 581/681 for customizing. The best deal I came across was a very clean 681 that had been Magna Ported. That seemed to keep the price down and I won the auction with an opening bid. I had the guy I bought it from ship it to my gun smith and after sending a list of specifications I set back and waited.

I wanted it cut to 3", which conveniently did away with the Magna Ports. Wanted the butt rounded, the hammer spur cut off because the action was to be DAO. I also asked for the front edge of the cylinder to be beveled and each of the chambers be chamfered. Trigger work was to put the emphasis on smooth, with positive ignition being of the most importance. As for sights, regulating the hight with that low rear sight was a bit of a problem. I first thought of a X-S Sight System front but they looked to be too high. Settled on a Novak front that was made for 1911s but could be dovetailed into the minimal rib on the 681. Novak calls it their MegaDot Tritium. I also asked that the rear notch be opened a bit and cut just a tad deeper. Finally I wanted a fine bead blast finish.

Well it got to my local dealer Friday and I picked it up Saturday. Turned out exactly the way I wanted it and gun is a complete delight. My friend did a superb job and this revolver is as nice and anything I've seen out of the S&W Custom Shop (I've owned 3 of those).

Hoping the weather cooperates for me and I can get out to the range without risking heat stroke. If I can I'll add a range report to this thread and a few more pictures.

I do believe you (and your smith) have created a masterpiece. That is just absolutely top notch. If S&W would come out with that package they would sell everyone they could produce. Nice job.

I believe that S&W has already built your dream gun as they did a run or two of 3 inch 681s through the Performance Center several years ago. 7 shot also, if memory serves. Some were made cut for moon clips also.

Yea they did. And while searching for a gun to do this project I bought two of them: the 586 L-Comp and a 681 two tone (Birdsong finish) black a green thing with an un-fluted cylinder. Both of those are 7 shooters and I built the one pictured to have a 6-shot for a more direct comparison to a 3", RB K-frame. I'd still like to get ahold of one of those, if for no other reason than to shoot it side by side with my 681.

It turned out great,,Hope it shoots good. The 386 I carry has the same grips and I love em. Was gonna get a set of Keith Brown hide out Ropers but decided to keep the rubber grips on it. Mine is a Mtn Lite with a 3 1/8" bbl, I think it's a great length. With a fancy set of grips, you could get into a BBQ with your gun, enjoy it. Larry

That's gorgeous! I really like the frosted finish. I wanted the same thing (I'm an unabashed slut for a 3" S&W in just about any chambering) but my eyes require more rear sight, so I got one of the 686+ guns and I absolutely LOVE it. Slicker than owl-poop, stout enough for full loads, and as Colt used to say in their 6-shot snubby ads, it has "that all-important extra shot". ;)

Who's your 'smith, if'n ya don't mind me asking? I have a 4-inch M-64 with a bafugly import stamp on the end of the barrel that has GOT to go, and I could always use another three-incher!

Handsome gun but fat chance on finding cool weather in your region this time of the year. Be at the range just before sunrise! Don

LOL - Don, I wasn't hoping for "cool weather", I'm just looking for something less than oppressive. (smile)

Good luck on finding one of those for sale. Almost impossible to find a plain jane standard 3" gun. Pretty much has come down to custom work in order to get the total package that you want.

I'd be all over that package.

Beautiful job. Please give us a range report when possible. My 681 has such a short front sight it would be good to know how your front one works out. Maybe cutting the rear groove deeper will help some.

Nice piece, everything you need, nothing you don't. How about a pic or two of the muzzle crown? Also, who's the 'smith that did the work?

I would like to RB my 681 and have the rear sight opened up, but don't think I'd chop the barrel.

Great gun! I really like that. I have a 586 L-Comp on my hip as we speak, and it is indeed near perfect for an old phart. Well, I will be 50 in a few weeks, so I guess I qualify.

Got a Wiley Clapp GP-100 in layaway too. Same concept, but in blue, with a gold bead front.

Love these 3"ers!

I love your gun! I have an "extra" 686 4-inch that would be a good candidate for that same treatment. As others have asked, would you mind providing us with the contact information for your gunsmith? He did a really nice job!

That dovetailing that Novak night sight into the bbl on non-adjustable sighted revolvers is one of the smartest things Smith, has not figured out! I have a 640Pro with Novak Night sights and they make that gun so versatile.

There's a Smith out of New Mexico whose last name is Sam Damewood IIRC that does that nice dovetail job that I've seen on 65s and 64 model Smiths.
