Since this continues to be the best place in the web for solid info...I need a good lawn edger. I don't mind paying for a good one as opposed to getting something "typical", which is to say designed to be cheap and last a year or two.
Anyone out there have one, what is it and any tricks to using it??? Thanks in advance for any info, it is greatly appreciated!!!!

I have an Atom edger. Made in Australia.
Very light and maneuverable on curves.
Mine is a 2-stroke, but they also now have 4-stroke.

I bought a McLane in 1985 to replace an electric edger I had been fighting for years. A few years back my son-in-law bought another McLane at a garage sale with a bigger Briggs and Stratton engine. It wouldn't start so he took it to the shop.

I had a lot more edging to do so I paid the shop and kept the bigger one - he took my old one and both are still going strong.

Bought an gas-powered edger similar to the one pictured below.Never did care for those electric toys. This offers stability while edging and cuts a nice line.I like the deep cut I get because it helps keep rain or sprinkler water on the lawn so it doesn't run off onto the driveway or sidewalks.

It cuts deep enough that I've also used it to cut out some sod along a fence where I planted some bushes.

I use a Honda 4 cycle stick edger that I bought at an estate sale and I have on old curved shaft Makita 2 stroke for back up. I've had walk behinds but I prefer the stick edgers. Keep a long screwdriver handy to scrape the mud build up between the blade and the blade housing and buy the Oregon edger blades. Once you get an edge defined it's easy to keep it looking crisp with a string trimmer. I only use the edger about 4 times a year. I like Husqvarna equipment but Stihl, Echo, Redmax, Shindaiwa, Tanaka are all good. I'm kind of an ope snob and don't buy Home Depot or Walmart equipment but prefer to deal with an outdoor power equipment dealer and buy commercial grade. Fortunately there is a great dealer about 5 miles away and they ship. :)

My blade edge will switch out with the weed eater. One power unit. Have used a setup like this for years. Lite weight and low maintaince. I also use the can gas that is mixed already. I had a 4 stroke that ran on regular gas. It would not rev high enough to do a good job.

The answer is, "it depends". When I only had a 150-200 feet or so to edge I just used my gas string trimmer and about once a month I pulled out the old "manual stick" with the teeth to keep things clean.

I tried one of the edger attachments for my trimmer and it was OK but many times more hassle on the change over than it was worth. Came in handy for the first trim of the year over the "manual stick".

When we moved to this place where I have about 350-400 YARDS of trimming, I bought this walk behind and love it. I change the blade about every other year for $15-$20.

I had a Sears with a 3 hp engine, never had a problem with it, I did see one that was on a lawn mower, don't remember what brand it was.

I have had a John Deere for over 15 years and it is the best one I have ever owened. Also, used it to bury an in ground electric dog fence and underground water line.

Check out a "Mantis" mini tiller.......great little tiller and

I'm 99% sure I have a edger with it ( Wife got it for me; IIRC, edger and one wheel) .....never used it as I only have 40-50 ft to edge so I just grab a square blade spade

I replaced a 2 cycle Craftsman with a 4 cycle McClane a few years ago and have been very impressed with it - starts right up (no mixing!) and plenty of power. We have a lot of sidewalk and driveway so I do go through some blades - replace every 2 or 3 uses.

We have a lawn maintenance company that does our lawn for us due to me having Asthma. The lawn service uses a Stihl lawn edger and from what I've seen it makes our lawn look good.

I recently replaced a locally (Pemco) made 2 wheel walk behind my dad bought in 1968 with an Echo 225 combo stick edger / weed eater. Chews thru the St. Augustine runners and is easy enough to handle where I use it around stepping stones, block planters, plastic landscape edging even trees. Swap out the ends and it's a straight shaft weedeater that handles weed stems thick as my thumb.

Never liked the curved weedeaters.

Hubby rents a gas powered edger every few years, and cuts wide and deep edges. Then he just zips the edge with the weed wacker to maintain it.

I bought a very used Power Trim 300-H about 20 years ago. It has a Honda motor.
Bet It's good for at least another 20 or even more. Got it from a retired comercial landscape contractor.

Thanks for all the replies and posting the photos!!!! I think I might prefer one on wheels as I have a lot of edging to do. Probably in excess of 450 feet or better. Now to go out and find one...not many places even carry outdoor power equipment these days, at least not around here.
You would think that, as good as an edger can make your lawn look, that they would be more popular.
Thanks again fellas!!!
