Lead bullets ok?

I have only shot CCI Minimags out of my 15-22 and it eats them up for $8 per 100. I'm seeing Federal lead selling for $3. Anyone having trouble with lead? Also, I have never shot lead bullets out of any of my guns, is cleaning the barrel more of a chore? Thanks.

Edit: Price on the Federal is for 50 rounds. Still a little savings.

In lower velocities leading the the barrel will be minimal, in higher velocities it is more pronounced, but with the right solvent it comes out quite easily.

Lead is fine. Been using the cheap federal in many of my 22's. My favorite though are Aguila interceptors still pretty cheap but pushes 40 grain at 1400 fps. Supposedly fastest stuff on the market.

I like standard velocity lead in my M42 ,M17and M18 CCI is the easiest to find in my area and groups well.

ALL .22 LR bullets are lead. Some have a VERY THIN copper wash on them to reduce leading. They are not jacketed or plated.

At normal velocities there is no difference in barrel leading.

Actually the CCI Mini Mags you have been shooting are lead with a thin copper wash...you can scrape it off with a fingernail .
More for lubrication and looks, they aren't jacketed or even plated.
The plain lead bullet ammo works just fine and will not lead your barrel any more than the copper washed.
At a savings of $5.00 a box....Go for it !

It's no different than any other semi auto 22. It will shoot anything fine as long as the gun will cycle it. So far, CCI Mini Mags are the only 99% reliable fodder in my (newish) 15-22.

I hadn't thought of it....

... but yeah, if they used actual jacketed bullets I doubt there would be any cheap .22 ammo. It's by far the most expensive component I need to buy. In other calibers I've been getting good service out of coated bullets. I don't know if they use it in .22 ammo or not.

Back when I had a S&W M15 .38 Special revolver it liked cast lead bullets quite a lot.

I've been wanting to try some of that CCI-Copper. Believe it started out as a California Compliant deal and is some kind of copper/polymer blend. Rated at 1850 fps w/ 21gr . Have only seen a few videos of it and it seems worthy of my trying a box or two.

I've been wanting to try the CCI Copper-22 (21gr) simply to experience the velocity and accuracy at targets less than 50 meters. But either the price or shipping was a bit much. Today I found some at Buds for 7.58 per 50 count box. I was initially doing two boxes. Shipping was 10.00 insured or 9.00 uninsured. For the heck of it I changed the quantity to 4 boxes and shipping remained the same. I took the 4. A couple of places were 20-30 cents cheaper per box but shipping was more. Posting this for anyone who is interested. Having done a bit of researching I found 2-3 folks who chronographed the rounds closed to 2000 than the advertised 1850 fps. Probably bit slower from a barrel under 18-20 inches. but it should be proportional. CCI COPPER-22 22LR 21GR 50/5000 $7.58

Communicated w/ CCI today and received the ballistic coefficient of their 21gr. CCI Copper-22 round. Based on the G1 model the BC is 0.092. Knowing the 21gr. isn't a "match/competition" round, I didn't get into fixture type (off-the-shelf barrel/match barrel/etc) or length. Probably 18"-20" length. Pretty interesting ballistics when compared to a basic 36/40gr.

I don't recommend using Remington Thunderbolt 22 or Winchester Western. Federal American eagle, Federal AutoMatch, CCI standard velocity are my go to choices.
