Lead Bullets

I long ago gave up any interest in what CA does. Wouldn't surprise me a bit.

I read this morning, that California has banned all lead bullets for hunting rather than in certain areas.

True?

You know, this is so easy to look up or research, I don't know why you have to even ask whether it's true.

But yes, it's true. Hunting with lead bullets and shot will be totally banned in California by July of 2019, after being gradually phased out in the intervening years.

Lead shot has been banned nation wide for all waterfowl hunting since around 1991, but it sure doesn't seem to have reduced the number of hunters, their activities, and the amount of money they spend doing it.

If hunters still want to kill animals for fun in California, they have all sorts of other types of cartridge/bullet combinations to choose from. So the argument trying to be made by some people that this is an attempt to ban hunting in California doesn't hold water.

There's also the argument that a lead ban will make the cost of ammo go up. Well, so? We're fifteen years into the 21st Century. There aren't a whole lot of gun-ammo-hunting-reloading-related stuff that hasn't gone up in price. Bought powder and primers lately? How about that high-tech scope, or even your latest camo jacket or pair of hunting boots?

Face facts. If you can afford a fancy-dancy gun to hunt with, pay hunting license fees, and all the other associated hunting costs, you can afford a few extra bucks for non-lead ammo.

I don't even see this as a Second Amendment issue or thread on this forum, period. The Second Amendment protects the right to keep and bear arms. It doesn't guarantee you can use any kind of ammo you choose, and it doesn't even say you have the right to hunt.

I don't see this as a problem. Wouldn't see it as a problem in my own state. But in this case, it looks like just another excuse for people to whine about crazy California, and poke fun at the state.

The hunting opportunities are disappearing in the west. Southern CA is going to be a dust bowl soon enough anyway. Lead bans have been in effect for upland hunting here in some areas for awhile. I got tired of trying to figure out where is was legal and where it wasn't so just threw in the towel. None of my upland guns are steel shot compatible.

Just another door closed to people who hunt. I still get my dog out and let her hunt but I don't carry a gun anymore. Just isn't worth the money for the amount of game that's available around here.

I see you don't live in CA or on the west coast. I just drove the full length of the state 3 months ago. I'm not relying on the media to tell me what it's like. Conditions are not good and will become worse. I've lived in the west all my life so I have something to compare it to.

Jim's correct. Yet, I'm still convinced those who want to take away our right to keep and bear arms, are always looking for a backdoor way to make this happen. Any firearm is just about useless with out ammo for it.

Well, you know I can't dispute that. And I wouldn't, anyway. The environmental, ecological, and wildlife conservation issues related to this are just way too many hot-button topics for me, though, so I'm gonna bow out of this thread.

California is lost. I'm retiring in 6 1/2 months and getting the hell out of California.
