My empty weight bags came today. I didn't realize lead shot was worth more than gold. Is there a suitable material that can be used in place of lead to get a good weight? Sand would be a last resort, since it says a full bag of sand will weigh about 7 pounds. I'd like about 20 pounds as a minimum.

Osmimum would be about the heaviest and most dense material you could use.

10 Grams of Osmimum would be $1064.00 and it's very reactive with the environment
so not the best to use. :)

Alternatively you could fashion a set of "straps" that bolt to the underside of the front
feet and wrap around the edge of the shooting bench.

MS: There is not enough clearance with the 15-22 to use three bags and the 25-round magazine. If reclaimed shot were available locally, that would be fine -- but shipping is more than the shot. Can anyone suggest a substitute for shot that would be close to the same weight? This is the 25-pound Caldwell bag.

All of you are looking for a more dense material. A pound of lead, feathers, styrofoam, mercury, or carbide powder all weigh a pound. The more dense the material, the smaller the volume it occupies.

This is like that magazine vs clip thing that sets some folks off.

Yeah I think I already covered the most dense element on
the periodic table :)

210 pennies make a pound. That would be $52.50 for 25 pounds. But I'm not sure that many pennies would fit in the Cauldwell bag, or if they would stack as nicely as led shot. Getting something locally is a must to avoid freight charges.

You could call the local scrap metal dealers and buy lead from them. Old wheel weights would work just fine.

Fresno, yep that could work! Use tin snips to snip them down into small bits so they
could move around and settle. I honestly think Steel Shot would be way more enviro
friendly though!

Find some "old" plastic weights for weight lifting (home gym type). They are filled with lead shot. Just cut a hole and fill your bag.

Should be able to find them cheap at a guarge sale or second hand shop.

If you have one of the sporting stores that take in used gym equipment get yourself a bar bell weight - or try Goodwill or like location - thats what I have seen guys at the range using
