Has anyone found a cowboy holster for their N frame that they really like. I was looking for a type that has some type of retention in case I slip and slide down the side of the hill so I don't loose my weapon. I have found some stuff at Old trading post that looks good quality. There are several custom makers i've checkd out some nice stuff, but you know everything in pic's looks good even the Taugua Pleather holsters. LOL

Thanks CP

Hi CP,

Welcome to the forum. There is a member here, Wyatt Burp, that makes holsters in a Western style--floral and engraved, as well as other styles.

He is a great guy and a pleasure to work with. I'd recommend him. He can basically make anything you want; and has good prices.

The above link shows some of his work about half-way down. Besides that, it is one of my favorite posts on the forum.

Thanks, Hobbyist. Here's western rig I made for a Colt New Service on top, and one for a 4" N Frame on the bottom. An unobtrusive hammer thong can go on the top one like on cowboy holsters. Various features can me swapped around, but I think a safety strap on the top one would look weird. The semi covered trigger guards give good tension, too, with a proper thickness welt.

Cowboy-style for double-action revolvers with retention device. Many folks would not call the Threepersons' style "cowboy" holsters, but I doubt they would say that to old Tom Threepersons' face. In addition to being a legendary lawman in Canada and Texas, old Tom was also a world champion rodeo cowboy and worked cattle ranches in Texas, Canada, and Mexico during his colorful lifetime.

The Threepersons' style holster was made to Tom's specifications by S.D. Myres Saddlery about 1920. One of my favorite projects was duplicating the original design and carving pattern from photos of Tom's original holster.

Lawrence had some Western styles, but today, I'd look hard at El Paso Saddlery. They replicate some older styles as well as offer more current designs.

I have several of their more modern types and a belt, all basket-stamped. Quality is excellent. You may have to wait a few months for delivery: they're in high demand.

About 10 years ago I wanted a "cowboy" style holster. So at the Louisville gun show I was walking around and looking. One table had a whole bunch of them. They were made by H H Heiser of Denver, sometime in the distant past. And I went through the pile, settling on one with .38 caliber cartridge loops. It was by far the cheapest marked and also the one in the best condition. Bein' dumb, I bought it. When I got back to our tables the guy in the end cap wanted to look at it. Then he asked me what I'd bought it for and how much I'd paid. Then he pointed out it was for a target sighted S&W. I had a couple of those.... :) So it turned out it fits a 6 and 6 1/2" RM and Outdoorsman. Guess that's not a real cowboy rig, but it will have to do for me.
