It's getting harder to find conventional 60 and 75 watt light bulbs. They' re being phased out for LED bulbs, as most of you know.

But can all normal table lamps use these new LED's in lieu of the older bulbs? Do we have to buy new lamps?

I'm guessing that the new bulbs have the packages imprinted with the equivalency to older ones?

Basic question, but I'm using new ones now just in the kitchen ceiling fixture, and my brother installed them.

A couple of store clerks were no help.

Thanks. Just want to be sure that I don't blow a lamp or start a fire.

The new LED lamps can be used in all incandescent fixtures, yes.

Incandescent bulbs use 1/3 to 1 amp of current. LED bulbs use less than 0.1 amp. If the LED bulb fits in the lamp or fixture, you don't have an electrical hazard. But your checkbook might get a dent.

I thought they were supposed to be cheaper to run?? Or, do you refer to initial cost of the bulbs?

The last a LOT longer. Some take a little time to warm up and deliver full intensity.

Be sure you do not use them on a dimmer switch, there are special ones for those.

There are also different color spectrums. I like the daylight (6500K or above) It has a bluish tint. The lower the color temp the more yellow it will seem. Depends on what you like.

Buy bulk packs at Wally Mart or Lowes, You can go higher in related output. For example if your lamp says 60 watt max you can use a 100 watt equivalent (I think it is around 26 watts)

My error, I was thinking CF bulbs not LED. So what I said above applies to the twisties CF.

Why not just get the mercury filled twist bulbs? They last longer than regular bulbs and their price is way less than LED. LED is the NEXT generation, but the upfront cost is still way to high over the twist bulbs.

I prefer the fluorescent for now.

LED doesn't use a lot less power than fluorescent and you can buy fluorescent bulbs for under a buck.

As for LED lasting longer, I saw an LED that cost $45 burn out in two weeks.

.

We built a new house five years ago and tried to use as many recycled and 'green' materials as possible. We installed compact fluorescent bulbs in every fixture, can and lamp in the entire house. We also live in a rural area with a power supply that is not quite up to big city standards. I discovered too late that if you have what the electricians call 'dirty' power, that is power with surges and minor outages, those CF lamps don't last at all. After replacing all of them several times in the first two years we now have incandescent bulbs everywhere that do last. I'm only sorry I didn't start hoarding them sooner because LED lamps are prohibitively expensive.

BEING, older i think that the newer bulbs stink. bad light, and they flicker all the time...I have a nice supply of 100, 75, and 60's down the basement, till I die.

I love my LED lights, especially in Florida it is nice when the house is not getting heated by the light bulbs. But don't buy the cheap stuff, you got to spend the money and get quality LED light bulbs

I also have a small stash of incandescent bulbs... but not enough to last until I die. Sooner or later I'll have to start using either CF or LED... and I dread it like a visit to an oral surgeon.

I have clean power and still find that the CF bulbs don't last any longer than regular incandescent lamps. The LED bulbs are so expensive that I haven't tried them yet.

And when all the incandescent bulbs are gone... when we all are using CF's, who will recycle every single one? That will be a lot of mercury ending up in landfills. We can thank the US Congress for that.

Home Depot and Lowes seem to still have a plentiful supply of incandescents and everytime I visit I buy lightbulbs,,,good old fashioned lightbulbs.;)
I'll have enough lightbulbs when I die I can be buried with a few to light my up my after life
I seen a special program some time ago on a PBS station and it was done by a lighting engineer, his final words were that there is no better light bulb and the one that still does the best job is the one that Thomas Edison invented,,,,so I'll take him at his word.
Bottom line is it's all about Money! ;)

Thanks. I did need the info on the CF bulbs, too.

I have one lamp using a CF and it seems to be lasting well.

Well I'm old school and don't need the government telling what I should be using. They can kiss the non talking end. Now, everything has a time and place. In the winter I like those heat producing incandescent bulbs, in the summer not so much. The CF bulbs have their place. If I'm going into a closet I don't have or want the time for a CF bulb to heat up and put out light so I can see. If we are going to be in a room for any length of time having 2 or 3 of those CF going is fine.

I can't speak about household LED bulbs which are expensive and not in my budget. I happen to be in the position of maintaining a traffic signal system. Well LED light use about 10% of the power of a incandescent bulb we used to use. But you let a lighting storm come through with a few close lighting strikes and I can be replacing quite a few $75 LED signal lights. In theory they are good for 8 to 10 years under normal conditions, which is great. But the thought of putting $25 or $30 LED bulbs in my house, no thanks. I guess when a storm approaches you can tun all your lights of and you should be safe.
Every piece of technology has it's place. We just need those clowns in DC to back off and let "us" decide what is best for our situation at any given time.

I don't have enough 100 watt bulbs, so I guess I'll just settle for 75 watt.
