I have a lee 4 hole auto turret press, the lee powder thrower that came with it sticks often and doesn't throw the charge. I have cleaned and oiled, still happens every 70 loads or so. My question, would another brand work with this press or am I married to a Lee powder?

Sounds like you are using a flake or stick powder. I will only use ball powders in most powder measures that I don't check each load on a scale. The flat ball powders like HP-38/Win 231 work for just about all handgun, and Win 748 and 760 work for most rifle loads. There are all kinds of ball powders out there. I only use a stick powder in rifle if I'm looking for something very specific and then I use a scale for each load.

I tried a few times to figure how to get a Uniflow to work on the turret, but it just wasn't worth the effort. If you have the standard and not the Pro Auto Disk then it's worth the upgrade in the parts.

You could always buy the Lee funnel that fits the Lee PTX die and just use a Uniflow or other to drop the powder into the funnel. I did that for a while.

I thought about trying one of these, but again just didn't think it was worth the effort.

Thanks for tips, I've been using WST.

What Powder measure exactly are you talking about?

The Perfect Powder measure that stands alone? The Auto Disc that goes on the press?

Neither should be oiled??

It's the auto disc that goes on the press and comes with the 4 hole turret press. I just spray the sping with oil.

OK, a little dab of oil or even better silicone grease on the lever where the spring attaches to. Where it passes through the notch on the swivel adapter. Make sure the thumb screws are just tight, not over tightened. Take the powder hopper off and rub some powder on the flat surface where the disc slides to "lube it a bit. Is the measure new or have you used it a while?

If that doesn't work, e mail or call Lee they will help you out.

I have exercised self restraint in not tossing my on the interstate. It works OK with ball powders and is terrible with Unique and other flake powders. I throw powder in a Ly1200 dps and drop it through a funnel. I would use any other measure to do the same with a flake powder.

AS ABOVE........Had a lee pro 1000 GIVEN to me many years ago......Threatend to take a ball peen hammer to it......gave it away too...Upgraded to another brand much better

Can you add this to the lee turret? Or does it have to be used separately?

I had a dozen of the Lee Auto-Disk measures, and experienc3ed what you're talking about from time to time. As long as I kept an eye on it and was aware when it was doing it, it really wans't much of an issue, just an annoyance. But I upgraded seven of the measures to use the "Pro" adjustable charge bar, and I love them. I shoot a lot of WST.

I just bought this Adj charge bar as it replaces the discs that keep sticking. Once I get it, use it, I will report about it to see if it solves the problem.

Whether you use the adjustable charge bar or the disks, puff graphite on the base before you lay the disk on, then puff more on the top of the disk before you attach the top. Tighten the brass screws (Pro?) FIRMLY but not so tight it doesn't move freely. I do this each time I change disks.
Most accurate, consistent measure I have ever used.

I have used my Autodisk measures so happily and trouble free for so many years that I had almost forgotten that they could give a little trouble when starting out. Dick's advice to use graphite is good. Over time graphite from the powder and use will slick things up but in the very beginning sticking can be an issue. Ironically, rather "rough" operation of the press(quick strokes and hard stops ) can enhance consistency with the autodisk. The advice to use dry lube like graphite is correct.... but I have found occasional cleaning of the actuating parts with CLP and wiping away the excess to cause no problems.

You'll want to be VERY careful using oil on the Auto Disc. The oil can seep down into the die. Powder will start sticking and will eventually close the path resulting in erratic charge weights and squibs. Ask how I know... Had to pull a few bullets.:o

Pull the Auto Disc off the riser & check the powder path.
