left handed safety

so i just got my early x mas prsent from the wife hope to have pics up soon but in the mean time is it possible to move the safety over to the left handed side like a my m4 that i use in the navy ? i haven t really broken the gun down part by part yet

Yep, move the safety between safe and fire, and you can gently push it out. And then install it from the other side.

With the 15-22 safety lever being narrower in the center than at the edges that catch the detent you also need to remove the grip. Removing and reinstalling it on the normal side is easy since you can depress the detent from inside the hole, but going lefty blocks the access to that.

Your videos should have everything needed for removing the grip and safety though.

Good point about reinstalling it. Forgot about the lack of a way to start the detent.

I was able to relocate my selector without removing anything. If I remember correctly, I just angled the selector to get the detent started.

Yeah there is a starter indent in the selector which "should" allow you to start it without removing the grip. I've not tried it though!

How about an ambi safety? Will one of these work with the M&P 15-22 lower? I heard Brett248Vista mention in one of his videos that he thought there was a width difference between a 15-22 and a standard lower.

There is a width difference. Some guys have "made" the ambi safety's work but they are not a drop in.

I switched mine to the left, just use a small screwdriver or something to hold down the detent from the opposite side and it slides right in.

Just brought my new M&P15-22 home today, and switching the safety over to left handed was number 2 on my job list after cleaning the bore and such. Found it was very easy if I removed the grip to release the tension on the detent spring.

I got a prototype ambi' safety from another forum member that them have been working on, he made it on a 3d printer, one of those ones that uses plastic to shape what you want, it works fairly well, I haven't horsed it around yet to see how well it will hold up to say teenagers( got 3 that all shoot) but it has worked fine for me so far

If I remember right, the forum member will be making it from T6 Aluminum.

The DPMS ambi-safety listed above will not fit the 15-22 receiver, due to the receiver is too thick. The solution is to put a JP selector lever installed on the other side. You can find the lever here.
