Can you tell whether a K frame is left or right hand thread ejector rod without unscrewing it?

You can tell by the dash number (engineering change) when the change occured from right to left-hand threads . . . but it varies by model number. For example:

fixed sight - the model 10 regular barrel changed from right to left hand thread with the dash 2 but the model 10 heavy changed with dash 3. The models 11 & 12, however, changed with dash 1.

target sight - the models 14, 15, 17 & 18 all changed from right to left threads with dash one.

Obviously every engineering change after the one above would also have the left-hand thread.

On page 23 of Kuhnhausen's S&W book, he says:
"Late style S&W ejector rods are left threaded to tighten with cylinder rotation. Most late ejector rods are marked with a line or groove cut next to the end knurling."

If you have some new guns, look at them to see the groove he's referring to, then look at your K frame--if it is grooved, I'd bet it's left-hand threaded.

Got it. Coming from the cylinder forward, the line is cut just before the knurling starts.

exacting what I was looking for.

Thanks, Charlie
