One of my colleagues in the office in which I worked at the time was appointed to the bench at the lowest level court in WA in 2011 or so. Another friend then on the Court of Appeals came to the celebration and took great glee in introducing me to other appellate judges as the most cynical person he knows. I have no idea why. :p

Last Friday I had lunch with friends in the office from which I retired. We used to call them "Bad Kids Lunches". One of them had a really difficult pregnancy last year, and I am kind of amazed that she and the little one survived (about 9 weeks in the NICU 120 miles away); both are thriving now. Someone suggested we have a show and tell contest (in the restaurant) to see whose scars were worse (pretty sure mine were not). We declined. And FWIW, this was the civil division - we were vicil like a pet hyena.

The humor that goes with surviving criminal justice work is ... hard on the initiated.

#1 - beat the odds. In the 20% for 44 years with the bravest, most patient woman God ever made.
#2 - went away in retirement after I quit carrying IWB at 4 o'clock and the stress went down
#3 - mea culpa. Haven't been below threat level yellow since 1978
#4 - mostly cleared up in retirement
#5 - that's me
#6 - ditto
#7 - it's either that or punch someone

Not really funny, but absolutely true! Any LEO on the job for 20 years can give you that list, and more, from personal experience.:(
